12 U.S. women receive draws for Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday

Tamyra Mensah in action at 2016 U.S. Open will be among 12 USA entries at the Spanish Grand Prix.


MADRID, Spain – A group of 12 U.S. women’s wrestlers, including top Seniors and Juniors, have weighed in and received their draws for the Grand Prix of Spain, which concludes Sunday.


2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion Tamyra Mensah (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) will open against 2014 Junior World silver medalist Dalma Caneva of Italy at 69 kg/152 lbs.


At 48 kg/105.5 lbs., U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Sunkist Kids) will battle Yamileth of Honduras in her opener.


Four members of the 2016 U.S. Junior World Team will compete, including a pair of past Junior World bronze medalists, Becka Leathers (Choctaw, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/128 lbs.


Leathers, a 2015 Junior World medalist, battles 2016 Pan American silver medalist Giulia Penalver de Olivera of Brazil in round one. Miracle, a 2014 Junior World medalist, opens against Lydia Perez of Spain.


The other two 2016 Junior World Team members in the draw are Maya Nelson (Denver, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Rachel Watters (Ankeny, Iowa/Gator/OKCU Women’s RTC) at 69 kg/152 lbs.


The men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions were held on Saturday. The USA has won three medals, with freestyle golds from James Green at 70 kg and David Taylor at 86 kg and a Greco-Roman bronze from Patrick Martinez at 80 kg.
