Kendric Maple (Lincoln, Neb./Titan Mercury WC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on September 19, 2017.

Competing in his first international tournament on the Senior level, Maple captured gold at the Alexander Medved International held in Minsk, Belarus, last weekend. The Alexander Medved International is perennially one of the top international contests each year.

Maple won three matches in his conquest of the 61 kg/134 lbs. weight class. He opened with a comfortable 7-0 win over eventual bronze medalist Armitaev Kuat of Kazakhstan. Maple then won back-to-back bouts over Russian foes to claim the gold. In the semifinals, he came out on top in a 10-7 shootout against Ramazan Ferzaliev, and for the championship, he topped Eduard Grigorev, 2-1.

Maple was one of three U.S. men’s freestyle medalists at the event. U.S. National Team members Nathan Tomasello and Dom Bradley earned a silver and bronze medal, respectively.

This year marked Maple’s serious entry as a Senior-level threat domestically. He finished in second place to 2016 World champion Logan Stieber at the U.S. World Team Trials held in Lincoln, Neb. Months prior, Maple won his first U.S. Open championship in Las Vegas, Nev.

He also owns a fourth-place finish from the U.S. World Team Trials and runner-up honors from the U.S. Open in 2015.

Maple was a 2013 NCAA champion and three-time NCAA All-American for the University of Oklahoma. In addition, he topped the Big 12 Conference three times as a Sooner.

This summer, Maple transitioned into a role as an assistant coach for the University of Nebraska, and trains full time at the Nebraska Regional Training Center alongside Olympic champion and four-time World champion Jordan Burroughs, two-time World medalist James Green and U.S. World Team Trials runner-up Dom Bradley.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
