Champions at the 2022 USMC Junior and 16U Nationals were not only found on the mat. Look toward the sand at Gastropub Volleyball in Fargo, North Dakota.

The USA Wrestling Beach Tour of America continued with the Fargo Summer Showcase and 16U/Junior Beach Nationals at Fargo, North Dakota, last week. In a first of its kind event, the organizers and hosts at Gastropub Volleyball were pleased with the event and turnout.

This year’s competition featured 103 athletes from 15 states. The event will continue in the future to offer athletes an opportunity to try beach wrestling alongside their usual Fargo wrestling opportunities. Beach wrestling is one of the fastest growing styles of wrestling. The states represented defined regional boundaries and traveled across the country for the first annual beach wrestling tournament in Fargo, North Dakota. They were North Dakota, Ohio, North Carolina, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington, Indiana, Illinois, Arizona, Hawaii, Virginia, Michigan, New York and Wisconsin.
“Twenty years ago, we started Junior women in Fargo with just over 100 participants. Look how far it has come. Twenty years later, we started with Beach wrestling in Fargo with over 100 participants. Who knows how big Beach Wrestling will be in Fargo 20 years from now. Fargo is all about tradition. We hope we started a new tradition here,” said Ed Duncan, Beach tournament director.

Virginia’s Mia Galindo grabbed first at 100 in the Junior Girls pool competition. She also placed seventh in the Junior women’s freestyle tournament in the same weight.

Up at the 112-117 Junior Girls pool division, Indiana’s Emily Anderson swept Julianna Burkett-Erice of Virginia for the win. Indiana wrestlers found more sand success with four more wins in this division. classes. Catharine Campbell won at 122 while Cailin Campbell emerged as winner in a four-woman pool at 127.

At 144, Josie Hause swept Washington’s Cassidy Sylves. At heavyweight, Indiana’s Riley Dempewolf closed out the Indiana party after she swept teammate Haley Thompson. In the Fargodome, Dempewolf claimed third in the Junior women’s freestyle tournament at 200.

Pennsylvania’s Morgan Edwards used a 20-second pin over Iowa’s Josephine Wearmouth to win at 132. In the division’s only one-woman pool, Ohio’s Jazmine Ross-Calix won by default. At 152, Virginia’s Morgan Edwards claimed gold while Kami Senlycki of Minnesota did the same at at 164-180.

Arizona owned the podium in the 16U women’s division. Its girls snatched four of the six pools.
Lisa Pastoriza recorded two pins to win an all-Arizona bracket at 100. Ella Greiner of Arizona outlasted Isabella Leighty of Pennsylvania at 112-117. At 122, Arizona’s Sophia Smith found gold with two pins and at 132, her teammate, Isis France, did the same. In 16U women’s freestyle, France finished third. At 138-144, North Carolina’s Maggie Milbery won via two forfeits, and at 164-180, Nebraska’s Piper Zatechka claimed the title.

In the 16U boys pool competition, no state secured multiple championships. Illinois’ Drew Davis recorded three pins to win a four-man pool at 106-113. At 132, Arizona’s Jayden Anderson won by default as the lone competitor. Cooper Reves of Kansas established sand supremacy at 152-160. Ohio’s Owen Pummel pummeled his competition with three pins in the 170-190 pool. Kaden Darwin of Kansas logged two pins for the win in the 220-285 pool.

Indiana found two champions in the Junior boys division with the same guy. Bradley Owen won at 132-144 and 152. Down in the lightweights, Montana’s Cole Rogers recorded two pins to win at 106-113. Ty Edwards of Illinois grabbed the same result as Rogers at 113-120. Up at 160-170, North Carolina’s Connor Reece emerged as champion. In the 195 pool, Oregon’s Riley Jones tallied two pins to win, and Logan Marissal of Massachusetts won it all at 220-285.
