The 1988 Olympic Trials brought an intense battle for the 74 kg men’s freestyle spot for the Seoul Olympics. The finals came down to reigning Olympic champion Dave Schultz vs. international newcomer Kenny Monday.
In the best-of-three series, Monday stunned Schultz, who had a stronghold on the weight class internationally, winning the 1983 Worlds and securing three other World medals along with his 1984 Olympic gold.
Later that summer, Monday went on to win gold at the ’88 Olympics. He also competed at the ’92 Olympics in Barcelona, winning silver, and ’96 Olympics in Atlanta, taking sixth.
