A new event, the FloWrestling RTC Cup, presented by Titan Mercury WC, was announced this weekend, and will be scheduled for Dec. 4-5.
The event, which is utilizing the format used for UWW’s World Cup and World Clubs Cup, will feature a number of top Regional Training Centers competing in dual meets. The competition is scheduled to be held in Ohio, but the plan at this time is for there to be no fans at the event. All of the action will be broadcast live by FloWrestling.
According to Jonny Ruggiano, the Operations Director for Titan Mercury WC, teams will be placed in two pools of between three and four RTCs. The top two teams in each pool will advance to a semifinal round and a final championship match. Numerous Senior-level athletes will get a chance to wrestle between three and four dual meets against high-quality opponents.
As announced by FloWrestling, there will be $200,000 up for grabs in the competition. As Ruggiano explains, each team will get an appearance fee, with additional payouts given based upon team finish. The championship team will earn $50,000.
“The event will give wrestling fans a chance to see a great dual meet competition,” said Ruggiano. “This will also allow the wrestlers a chance to compete, and to help them get prepared for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and the Olympic year.”
The field for the RTC Cup is currently being finalized. Additional information on the teams, the athletes and the pairings will be announced when it becomes available.
The RTC Cup includes a provision which is used by UWW at the World Clubs Cup, where each team will be able to include two athletes on their roster who are not training at their RTC. At the World Clubs Cup, this has been a popular and effective way to add additional quality to the field and excitement to the competition.
“We want to see RTCs continue to grow,” said Ruggiano. “We are starting with an event for RTCs in men’s freestyle, and hope to see this expand in the future.”
