On July 23, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) announced its most recent plans for the 2020-21 high school schedule. As part of this plan, the traditional winter sport of wrestling was shifted to a season from January 2-February 21. In addition, the NIAA noted that “at this time, it is anticipated that there will not be State Tournaments.”
USA Wrestling of Nevada, in a letter to high school wrestling coaches on July 24, committed to hosting a state-level tournament for high school boys and girls, sanctioned by USA Wrestling, if the NIAA cannot hold an official state high school wrestling championships for Nevada student-athletes.
Rob Cate, the state chairperson of USA Wrestling of Nevada, provided this following information to the high school wrestling coaches across the state.
“USA Wrestling of Nevada will provide a Championship event (as allowed by the state) to athletes at the high school level (both men and women). We will follow the NIAA guidelines as much as possible to make this State Championship as normal as possible for our athletes. 2021 will produce a Nevada State Champion in the different divisions as always.”
USA Wrestling has notified the NIAA about the plan of a state-level event sanctioned by USA Wrestling if COVID-19 conditions prevent an official state championship. The NIAA told USA Wrestling that it would not oppose the competition nor would there be any eligibility issues for athletes who participate in the USA Wrestling event.
Cate, who chairs the national USA Wrestling Folkstyle Committee, will be working closely with USA Wrestling’s national staff and volunteer leadership, to provide the Nevada wrestling community with the safest and most efficient competition possible.
In response to the pandemic, USA Wrestling has published Return to the Mat Guidelines and Return to Events Guidelines, providing recommended safety and health procedures for wrestling training and competition. The foundation of these guidelines is to follow the state and local health requirements, while using additional protocol to provide a clean environment which respects appropriate physical distancing. Tournaments following these guidelines have already been successfully held in recent weeks.
USA Wrestling of Nevada also provides additional training and competition opportunities for wrestlers of all ages across the state year round. The proposed USA Wrestling of Nevada high school state tournament, if it is necessary to conduct, is an additional program which the organization provides to strengthen and grow the sport for the youth of Nevada.
USA Wrestling is the national governing body of wrestling in the United States. Through its state associations, including USA Wrestling of Nevada, the organization provides wrestling opportunities for 240,000 members nationwide. USA Wrestling has developed a plan to assist any state high school wrestling community which may see its high school wrestling opportunities reduced or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
