Match of the Day: Tamyra Mensah-Stock defeats World champion Elena Pirozhkova to make the 2017 World Team

In 2017, Tamyra Mensah-Stock and Elena Pirozhkova clashed in the World Team Trials finals. Both wrestlers were 2016 Olympic Team Trials champions. Pirozhkova earned the spot at 63 kg and finished fifth at the Rio Games. Mensah-Stock won the Trials at 69 kg but did not qualify the weight class for the Olympics.
In 2017, Pirozhkova, an eight-time World Team member, four-time World medalist, three-time World finalist and 2012 World champion, bumped up to 69 kg. At the time, Mensah-Stock had yet to compete at a World Championship.
Mensah-Stock took the series two matches to none. While she didn’t make the podium in 2017, Mensah-Stock earned a bronze medal in 2018 and a World title in 2019.
