Chaid wins freestyle gold at Veteran Worlds; Swartz and Nacey get silver; Mallett, Anderson, Bellavia add bronze

TBILISI, Georgia – Daniel Chaid of San Jose, Calif. won a gold medal at 130 kg in Div. E in men’s freestyle at the Veterans World Championships on Friday.
Chaid defeated Attila Szabo of Romania, 8-0 in the gold-medal match. Chaid scored a first-period takedown to lead 2-0 at the break. Chaid was placed on the shot clock in the second period, and was able to get a takedown before the 30 seconds were completed to lead 4-0. He added two ankle lace turns to stretch his lead to 8-0 and Szabo was unable to score as time ran down.
Chaid won Group B at his weight class, scoring an 11-0 technical fall over Mamuka Klajeishvili of Georgia and a forfeit over Riza Yildirim of Turkey. In the semifinals, Chaid beat Abdualla Zabakov of Kazakhstan, 6-3.
It was Chaid’s second career Veterans World title, to go along with his 2000 Veterans World freestyle gold medal. Chaid was an NCAA champion for the University of Oklahoma, and a member of the U.S. Senior Freestyle National Team for many years.
Chaid won the first Veterans World gold medal for Team USA so far this year.
Claiming silver medals for the USA were Brad Swartz of Puyallup, Wash. in Div. E at 78 kg and Joshua Nacey of Rock Springs, Wyo in Div. B at 100 kg.
Swartz won his first two matches to reach the finals, beating Omer Ersoz of Turkey, 2-1 and Jemal Gigauri of Georgia, 3-2. In the gold-medal finals, Melis Turganbaev of Kyrgyzstan was able to toss Swartz with a bodylock and secure a pin at 1:04.
Swartz was attempting to win a fifth career Veterans World gold medal, as he has won Veterans World freestyle gold medals in 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Nacey powered to the finals with two wins, stopping Subhash Chander of India, 9-4 in the quarterfinals, and putting away Ionel Bojoaga of Romania with a pin in 1:25 in the semifinals. In the finals, Nacey fell to Ebrahim Tavakkoli of Iran, 7-0. Tavakkoli opened the match with a four-point takedown, added a step out point, then scored a spin behind takedown in the closing seconds for the win.
Winning bronze medals for the United States were Will Anderson of Danville, Calif. (Div. B, 70 kg), Joseph Bellavia of San Diego, Calif. (Div. B, 130 kg) and Jeffrey Mallett of Lanham, Md. (Div. E, 62 kg)
Anderson opened with a pair of victories, getting a technical fall over Yuji Sugata of Japan, 14-4, then stopping Csaba Sipos of Hungary, 7-4. In the semifinals, he was pinned by Katsuyoshi Ito of Japan, who went on to win the gold medal. In his bronze-medal bout, Anderson outlasted Serhii Shevtsov of Ukraine, 11-7.
Mallett dropped his first bout to Zhora Hovhannisyan of Armenia, who advanced to the finals, pulling Mallett back into repechage. Mallett defeated Mirhojjat Hosseini of Iran, 5-3, in repechage. In his bronze-medal bout, Mallett held the upper hand throughout the match, on the way to a 4-0 victory over Susumu Hashiura of Japan.
Bellavia won Group B with victories over Tomasz Bujoczek of Poland, 6-0 and a forfeit over Christopher Pierce of the USA. In the semifinals, he fell to Aydin Halimoglu of Turkey. His bronze-medal match was a rematch with Bujoczek, who he beat by technical fall, 11-0 this time.
Four U.S. wrestlers qualified for bronze medal matches, where they were defeated to finish fifth in their weight classes: Gary Cook of Syracuse, N.Y. (Div. B, 62 kg), Roger Stewart-Fredrick of Colorado Springs, Colo. (Div. B, 62 kg), Petros Petrosyan of Los Alamitos, Calif. (Div. D, 88 kg) and Russell Schenk of Holiday, Fla. (Div. E, 88 kg).
With the six medals won in men’s freestyle on Friday, the medal haul for the USA is now up to 13 medals. The USA added seven medals in Greco-Roman over the first three days of the event.
There are 14 U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers in Div. C and Div. D who will be competing on Saturday. Among those entered is two-time Veterans World freestyle champion George Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who will wrestle at 130 kg in Div. C in both styles in Tbilisi. Porter won Veterans World freestyle golds in 2016 and 2017. The draws for the U.S. athletes are below.
The event will be broadcast live in the United States on Trackwrestling. Tbilisi is eight hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern time zone.
