NARITA, Japan - With a 6-4 victory over Mongolia, USA’s Women’s Freestyle team punched its ticket into the World Cup championship finals, finishing with a 2-0 record in Group B on Saturday.

This match was cathartic, as USA lost to Mongolia in the bronze match at the World Cup each of the last three years prior to this victory.

Now with a finish on the podium secured they have their sights set on claiming gold for the second time in team history, with the only World Cup title for the USA coming in 2003. This will be USA’s sixth podium finish in team history and first since 2011.

It was a back and forth match with Mongolia, with USA winning the first two bouts. Whitney Conder battled back from a 3-0 deficit to win 4-3, and Sarah Hildebrandt stayed locked in to get a pin in her match up.

Then Mongolia stormed back with three victories in a row to take a 3-2 lead halfway through the dual.

Up next for USA was 18-year-old Macey Kilty at 62 kg, who just over two weeks ago was in Budapest taking silver at the U23 World Championships.

Kilty was in serious trouble early in the match, fighting off her back and narrowly avoiding being pinned. She was able to get a reversal and then a leg lace to pull ahead. Solid positioning the rest of the way helped Kilty secure a 4-2 win and give USA back the momentum.

“That match was huge, that was the dual,” says Head Coach Terry Steiner. “She had a really quick turnaround from U23s to be ready to compete here but that match is exactly why we wanted her here. We know she’s got an incredible future ahead of her and these kinds of opportunities are huge for her development.”

After losing a number of close matches to Mongolia at the World Cup over the last few years, this was a big win for Team USA.

“There’s no easy finish against Mongolia,” says Steiner. “They’re always throwing hips or underhooks and they make it very difficult to finish takedowns. We had to scrap for every point out there and our team fought through a lot of tough moments to get a big team win.”

Earlier in the day, the USA beat Russia 8-2. Their 2-0 record won Group B, advancing them to the championship dual.

In tomorrow afternoon’s finals, USA will face off against the host team and winners of the last four World Cups, Japan.

Japan edged China by a score of 6-4, winning Group A to make their 5th straight appearance in the finals. In the 18-year history of the event, Japan has never failed to make the podium, winning bronze or better in every year the event has been held.

The gold medal match between USA and Japan will take place Sunday, Nov. 17th at 2:30pm local time (12:30am ET). All of the action can be seen live in the United States on Trackwrestling.
