SPOKANE, Wash. – The first day of men’s freestyle at the 16U National Duals featured the pool competitions, where teams were split into four different pools and competed in a bracket format.
Winning their pools and advancing to the Gold/Silver Pool were Minnesota Blue (Pool A), Illinois (Pool B), California (Pool C) and Iowa (Pool D). The Gold/Silver Pool will determine the top eight teams in the tournament.
Minnesota Blue won the Greco-Roman title on Thursday, and was dominant in its pool, defeating Georgia in the finals bout, 56-20. Their other victory was an even more commanding 63-10 win over Washington Blue in the semifinals.
Illinois had a tough final against 2018 16U National Duals freestyle champion Pennsylvania, emerging with a 44-30 victory. At last year’s 16U Duals in freestyle, Illinois was third, while Pennsylvania beat Minnesota in the finals. This year, Illinois and Pennsylvania ended up in the same pool.
California barely escaped its Pool C finals, beating Team New Jersey Blue by criteria, 34-34. California won five of the final seven bouts, but New Jersey won the last match at 88 pounds to force the tie.
Iowa had a strong performance in Pool D, beating Oklahoma, 40-33 in the first-place match.
The top two teams in each pool also advance to the eight-team Gold-Silver pool. The runners-up in the pool competition included Georgia (Pool A), Pennsylvania (Pool B), Team New Jersey Blue (Pool C) and Oklahoma (Pool D).
There was a true second-place match in Pool B, between Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, which was won by the Keystone State team, 43-32. Pennsylvania won 10 of the 17 bouts, including seven bonus point wins along the way.
One round of placement pool competition was also run on Friday night, but the final results in those pools will be completed on Saturday.
The tournament starts again on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. PT and will run until completion of all the medal match results in all of the pools.
The event is being broadcast live by TrackWrestling, and the results are also housed there.
All three of USA Wrestling’s major National Dual meet events (16U, 14U, Junior) will be live on TrackWrestling.
