BUDAPEST, Hungary – The gold-medal finals were set in the first four weight classes at the World Wrestling Championshps at the Papp Laszlo SportsArena on Thursday.

In the most anticipated semifinals, two-time World champion Frank Staebler of Germany battled 2015 World champion Rasul Chunayev of Azerbaijan in the 72 kg semifinals.

The bout was tied at 1-1, when Staebler took down Chunayev. He quickly lifted Chunayev and threw him for four points, then threw him again for another four points, to secure a 9-1 technical fall.

In the other 72 kg semifinals, 2016 World champion Balint Korpasi of Hungary beat Aik Mnatskanian of Bulgaria, 3-1. This sets up a battle between past World champions in the 72 kg finals on Friday night.

Host Hungary was the only nation with two finalists, as 2014 World champion Peter Bacsi beat Atabek Azisbekov of Kyrgyzstan, 12-4 in the 82 kg semifinals, and will face Emrah Kus of Turkey for the gold medal.

The United States had no athletes qualify for the semifinals on Thursday.

When Zholaman Sharshenbekov of Kyrgyzstan beat Ekrem Ozturk of Turkey with a 9-0 technical fall at 55 kg, the final U.S. wrestler who lost on Thursday morning, Sam Hazewinkel (Guthrie, Okla./Sunkist Kids) was eliminated from the tournament.

Hazewinkel was defeated in his first match by No. 1 seed Ozturk, 8-0. If Ozturk won the semifinal match, Hazewinkel would have been eligible for Friday’s repechage. All four of the U.S. entries on Thursday will not advance to Friday’s action.
