Gehloff defeats fellow Triple Crown contender Martinez in semifinals, Illinois brothers matchup in finals
by Koral Sugiyama, USA Wrestling
FARGO, N.D. – The Triple Crown laid on the line for two wrestlers at 94-pound: Maxximus Martinez of California and Mason Gehloff of Minnesota. Martinez seemingly had his ticket to his second finals of the week in his semifinals against Gehloff.
With 10 seconds left on the clock, Martinez leads 7-3 with two cautions to his name. Gehloff goes for a last second arm throw but sees no success. For one more chance Gehloff hits another arm throw. Martinez kips his hips back up and recovers. The time runs out and the referee’s hand shows four points.
The board reads 7-7, and Gehloff leads by the biggest-point criteria. California throws in the blue block. After discussion, the head referee holds up a four-point red paddle and an addition one point due to California’s lost challenge. Gehloff defeats Martinez 8-7, and continues his fight for the Triple Crown.
At the 132-pound title match-up, a family feud final ensues. Illinois’ Fabien Lopez takes on brother Damien Lopez. Fabien steps into the finals for a second time. As a freshman, he placed 2nd at the Cadet Greco-Roman tournament last year. As a freshman, Damien looks to surpass his brother’s 2017 accomplishment.
Out of the semifinalist stars, four move onto the finals: the above mentioned Mason Gehloff and Fabien Lopez along with Carson Manville of Pennsylvania at 152 pounds and Tyler Hannah of Wisconsin at 182 pounds.
