DORTMUND, Germany – 2018 Senior World Team member Dalton Roberts (Fowlerville, Mich./New York AC/NMU-OTS) earned a silver medal at 60 kg/132 lbs., the top finish among the U.S. entries at the German Grand Prix on Sunday.

Roberts was beaten in his gold-medal match by 2015 Junior World bronze medalist Erik Torba of Hungary, 8-2. Torba took a strong lead in the first period. With the bout tied at 1-1, a four-point arm throw by Torba was the key move in an active exchange which ultimately made the score 7-2 at the break. With Roberts forcing the action late in the match, Torba forced a stepout for his final point.

Roberts qualified for the finals on Saturday with a pair of clutch victories, defeating Viktor Petryk of Ukraine, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and Maxim Kazharski of Belarus, 5-3 in semifinals.

“Dalton Roberts was fun to watch compete. He has a great mindset and a strong fighting spirit. Although Dalton came up short on the scoreboard in the final, he had a great effort in the match and throughout the tournament,” said National Greco-Roman Coach Matt Lindland.

Placing fourth at 55 kg/121 lbs. was Max Nowry (Colorado Springs, Colo. (U.S. Army WCAP), after losing his bronze-medal bout to Fabian Schmitt of Germany, 6-3. Nowry fell behind Schmitt by a 6-0 margin at the break, as his German opponent scored a passivity point, then turned Nowry twice, followed by a stepout. In the second period, Nowry forced a stepout, then added two points on a front headlock turn, but time ran out on his comeback attempt.

Yesterday, in Pool A competition, Nowry was able to beat Schmitt, 5-1. Both advanced to the cross-bracketed semifinals, where they lost, putting them in the bronze-medal bout.

Placing fifth after dropping a bronze-medal match at 60 kg/132 lbs. was 2015 Junior World bronze medalist Taylor LaMont (Mapleton, Utah/Sunkist Kids). LaMont started the day by getting a forfeit win over Dawid Ersetic of Poland in the repechage round. In his bronze-medal bout, LaMont was unable to stop the offense of Ardit Fazliija of Sweden, losing by technical fall, 9-0

It was a difficult day for Team USA on Sunday, which lost all five of the matches contested on the mats during the day. LaMont’s repechage forfeit win was the only victory for the team today.

In his repechage match at 82 kg, 2018 World Team member Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets) was hit by a pair of arm throws, each for four points, to lose an 8-0 technical fall to Roland Schwarz of Germany. The match started with Speiller using a body lock to toss Schwarz to his back, but the move was called a leg foul after the German corner challenged.

In a repechage match at 87 kg, 2018 World Team member Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/OTC) jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first period, before dropping the bout in the second period to Aleksandar Stjepanetic of Sweden, 5-5 by criteria. Martinez quickly had Stepanetic on his back for a pair of turns and added a passivity point to secure the lead. In the second period, Stepanetic had a passivity and turn to make it 5-3, then won the match with a late takedown.

The USA entered 11 athletes in the German Grand Prix, including seven members of the 2018 Senior World Team, which used this respected international tournament as a tune-up for the 2018 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in October. The team will stay in Germany for another week to participate in an international training camp.

“The German federation put on an outstanding event. This was a strong tournament with many great nations. We have areas we need to continue to improve on. We are up for the challenge to raise our level, and looking forward to the opportunity to train with many of the top nations in the world while here in Germany,” said Lindland.

The updated medal standings will be posted when the event is completed later this morning.
