VASTERAS, Sweden – For the second straight week, Randon Miranda (Palmdale, Calif./NMU-OTS) won a Senior gold medal in Sweden, this time claiming the 59 kg/130 lbs. gold medal in Greco-Roman at the Malar Cup.

A week ago, Miranda won a gold medal at the Klippan Cup in Klippan, Sweden. Miranda was a member of the 2017 U.S. Junior World Team.

Miranda was dominant in winning four straight matches, including an 8-0 technical fall over Nocolaj Schroder of Sweden in the finals. Miranda scored three technical falls and a pin on the way to the top of the podium.

In the Cadet division, individual gold medals went to Benji Peak of Elkhorn, Wis. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Peyton Robb of Medford, Minn. at 76 kg/167 lbs.

The tournament was conducted under the old two-pool, double-elimination vertical pairing system, giving athletes many matches. Peak won eight straight matches to capture his gold medal, while Robb went 6-0 in his bracket. Peak scored a 10-0 technical fall over Radoslaw Molin of Sweden in his gold medal round, and racked up seven technical falls during the event. Robb scored an 8-4 decision in his gold-medal bout over Lukas Hoier Jensen of Denmark in the finals, and had a pin and two technical falls along the way.

The U.S. entered 20 Senior athletes in the two-day tournament, and came home with five medals. At the Cadet tournament, the USA had seven entries and won four medals. The USA won the team title in both the Senior and Cadet divisions, and was recognized as the combined champion for the Senior/Cadet divisions.

On the Senior level, claiming silver medals were Carter Nielsen (Foley, Minn./NMU-OTS) at 80 kg/176 lbs. and Nick Boykin (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 130 kg/286 lbs.

Nielsen got on a great run with four straight dominant wins, scoring three pins and a technical fall in his pool competition. The fourth match, a pin over Anton Carlsson of Sweden, pushed Nielsen into the finals, where he was defeated by Rajbek Bisultanov of Denmark, 11-2.

Boykin won a silver medal for the second straight week, after taking second at the Klippan Cup last weekend. Boykin went 2-1 in a four-athlete roundrobin. After an initial loss by fall to eventual champion Mattias Vitanen of Sweden, Boykin scored two straight pins over Fardin Anosheh of Sweden and Marc Leon of the USA.

Senior-level Bronze medals were collected by Tommy Brackett of Eads, Tenn. at 85 kg/187.5 lbs. and Spencer Wilson of Lawrence, Kansas, at 98 kg/215 lbs.

Brackett started out with three straight wins, scoring decisions over athletes from Sweden, Finland and Norway. After a semifinal loss, Brackett defeated Naib Illaladayev of Sweden, by technical fall, 10-0, in the bronze medal bout.

Wilson lost his first match, but came back to win his next two. In his bronze-medal match, he pinned Elias Kenneryd of Sweden.

Among the other U.S. Senior placewinners was Riley Briggs (Brentwood, Calif.,/NMU-OTS) who placed fourth at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. with a 4-2 record.

Among the Cadet entries, bronze medals went to Hunter Lewis of Stoughton, Wis. at 54 kg/119 lbs. and Dominic Damon of Seattle, Wash at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Lewis had a 3-1 record and Damon had a 4-2 record for the event.

Special thanks to coaches Rob Hermann and Lucas Steldt for their efforts on this tour.
