Olympians Coleman, Provisor, Smith among 15 U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers weighed in for Thor Masters Tournament

NYKOBING FALSTER, Denmark – A talented team of 15 Greco-Roman wrestlers from the U.S. have weighed in and received draws for the 2017 Thor Masters Tournament to be held in Denmark on Saturday.
The tournament is formatted in a vertical pairing style that features two pools per weight class and cross bracketing for placement matches. Each U.S. wrestler is guaranteed at least two matches, with most already paired up against his first two opponents. The exception comes at 130 kg/286 lbs. where there are six athletes that will compete in a round robin bracket.
Past U.S. Olympians Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP), Ben Provisor (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Robby Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) lead to American team into competition.
Coleman, a 2012 Olympian and reigning U.S. Open champion, begins his day at 66 kg/145 lbs. against Pal Erik Gundersen of Norway and Mohammed Yasin Peter of Germany. Most recently, Coleman swept the Armed Forces Championships in Greco-Roman and freestyle competition.
Fresh off a gold-medal win at the Dave Schultz Memorial International, Provisor will see Ahmed Iskandarani of Denmark followed by Jonas Plato of Sweden to start his tournament at 85 kg/187 lbs. Provisor was a member of the 2012 and 2016 U.S. Olympic Teams.
Smith has not competed since the Rio Games and is featured in the 130 kg round robin of six athletes. His first bout will be against 2017 Paris International silver medalist Oskar Marvik of Norway.
Also competing in the 130 kg bracket is U.S. Open champion Toby Erickson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) who will start the day against Jello Krahmer of Germany.
In addition to Erickson, U.S. Open champions Hayden Tuma (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP), Patrick Smith (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), Cheney Haight (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Kevin Radford (Fayetteville, N.C./Sunkist Kids) will be in action on Saturday.
2016 Olympic Trials champion RaVaughn Perkins (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) looks to continue his winning ways now up at 71 kg/156 lbs. He will face Matous Morbitzer of Czech Republic and Daniel Soini of Sweden to start the day. Perkins won the Dave Schultz Memorial International last month in his first competition back since the 2nd World Olympic Games Qualifier.
2015 World Team member Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) is paired against Sweden’s Anton Olsson (Sweden) and Norway’s William Svalestad in his first two matches at 80 kg/176 lbs.
After an undefeated run at the Armed Forces Championships, 2008 Olympian (Uzbekistan) and 2016 Olympic Trials runner-up Ildar Hafizov (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) returns to international competition at 59 kg/130 lbs. He will open against Kasper Ravn of Denmark and Juuso Latvala of Finland.
Other U.S. wrestlers entered include Sammy Jones (Folsom, La./New York AC) at 66 kg, Alex Sancho (Miami, Fla./New York AC) at 71 kg, Nick Tarpley (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 75 kg/165 lbs. and Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 98 kg/215.5 lbs.
The Thor Masters Tournament is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. local time which translates to 3 a.m. (ET) for those wishing to follow along in the U.S. Finals are scheduled for 4 p.m. (Local Time)/10 a.m. (ET).
