TAMPERE, Finland – U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers Randon Miranda, Dominick Demas, Wyatt Koelling and Cohlton Schultz have received their draws for the 2017 Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland. They are the final four wrestlers to represent the USA this week.
Returning to the World Championships is two-time Junior World Team member Randon Miranda (Palmdale, Calif./New York AC), who is facing 2015 Cadet World champion Turabek Tirkashev of Uzbekistan in the first round.
A win from Miranda will put him against either Sanshiro Takahashi of Japan or 2017 Asian Championships bronze medalist Liguo Cao of China.
At 66 kg/145 lbs., Demas (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus WC) drew Brazil’s Joilson de Brito Ramos Junior, who was the 2016 Pan American champion.
Should he advance, he’ll take on the winner of Sierra Leone’s Mathew Farmah and Bulgaria’s Stoyan Kubatov.
Farmah won bronze at the 2017 Junior African Championships.
Demas will compete in his first Junior World Championships, but it is not his first time of the World stage. He competed at the Cadet Worlds in 2015.
Koelling, who was also at the 2015 Cadet Worlds, will kick off his tournament at 84/185 lbs. against 2017 Nordic champion Aleksandar Stjepanetic of Sweden.
Winning the match would put him against either Wei Zhu Su of Taipei or 2017 Euro Championship silver medalist Mikita Klimovich of Belarus.
Wrestling for the U.S. in the Junior and Cadet World Championships, Schultz weighed in at only 106 kg, 14 kilograms under the limit. He drew 2016 Nordic champion Artur Vititin of Estonia to open his first Junior World Championships.
If he wins, he’ll face the winner of Sukhroj Azizov of Tajikistan and Amin Mirzazedeh of Iran.
Mirzazedeh finished fifth at Junior Worlds last year, while Azizov claimed silver at the 2016 Asian Championships.
The first session, which includes preliminary rounds through semifinals and repechage, will begin at 10 a.m. local time. The medal matches will take place at 6 p.m. local time.
Tampere, Finland is seven hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Time, meaning those wishing to watch live can tune in at 3 a.m. (ET). A live stream of the event, as well as brackets, can be found at Trackwrestling.com.
