As part of USA Wrestling’s 2017 Open Championships at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. this week, TrackCast will broadcast two major youth competitions, the Western Junior Regional Championships and the Las Vegas Kids & Cadet Open.
These are future World and Olympic Team athletes, featuring youth and high school athletes, competing at the same time and in the same arena as the current stars of Team USA on the Senior level.
The Western Junior Regionals will feature some of the country's best wrestlers in grades 9-12. There are three divisions being contested, starting with Greco-Roman on Wednesday, April 26, women’s freestyle on Thursday, April 27 and men’s freestyle on Thursday, April 27 and Friday, April 28.
This is usually the largest of USA Wrestling’s Junior Regional events, featuring top athletes from all across the nation. Athletes who place at this event traditionally have been very successful later in the summer at the Junior and Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D.
In the preregistration, a number of returning Western Junior Regional champions have already signed up. Included in Greco-Roman are Derrick Stacey of Idaho (113), Riley Gurr of Montana (132) and Myles Wilson of Colorado (182).
In women’s freestyle, five of last year’s champions are back: Alexia Seal of Canada (112), Jacqueline Lew of Canada (117), Clare Garcia of California (117), Victoria Seal of Canada (121) and Erin Geddie of Canada (164). Two past age-group national champions, Kaden Campbell and Jerzie Estrada of Colorado, are also registered.
In men’s freestyle, champions who return include Gage Woods of Nevada (113), Jesse Gomez of Texas (120) and Jeremy Trinh of California (132). One of last year’s freestyle runners-up, Nelson Brands of Iowa (160) is also registered.
The top four place winners in each Junior weight class qualify for their state's National Team above the state limit at the combined Junior and Cadet Nationals in Fargo, N.D. in July.
This is the fourth year that the Las Vegas Kids and Cadet Open will be included with the Open Wrestling Championships. The highly popular tournament allows younger wrestlers the chance to compete against athletes from many states in a quality tournament in freestyle, Greco-Roman, and folkstyle. The competition includes youth ages 7 to 16.
This year, the event was sold out online, with over 1,600 entries expected during the three full days of competition. That makes this the largest ever Las Vegas Kids & Cadet Open, an indication of its growing popularity around the country.
The competition begins on Thursday, April 27, with the Greco-Roman action. The style changes to freestyle on Friday, April 28. The tournament concludes on Saturday, April 29 with folkstyle action.
In addition to the youth and Cadet divisions in folkstyle, an additional folkstyle tournament has been added for Junior boys, and Cadet and Junior girls.
