LAS VEGAS – Four U.S. athletes have weighed in and received their draws for day five of competition at the World Championships in Las Vegas, Nev.
The World Championships will continue tomorrow at the Orleans Arena with the final women’s freestyle weight class of 60 kg/132 lbs. and the three men’s freestyle weight classes of 61 kg/134 lbs., 86 kg/189 lbs. and 97 kg/213 lbs.
Three-time U.S. Women’s Freestyle World Team member Leigh Jaynes-Provisor will square off against Madina Bakbergenova of Kazakhstan tomorrow morning in her first World Championships appearance since 2012.
“Leigh has a ton of ability and has been on this stage before,” said U.S. women’s freestyle coach Troy Steiner. “The biggest thing for Leigh is she can control the tempo of the match. She can control the situation she puts herself in and she’s got to get to her scoring move.”
A pair of Ohio Regional Training Center teammates, Reece Humphrey and Kyle Snyder, will don the stars and stripes on Friday in the men’s freestyle competition.
Humphrey, a three-time U.S. World Team member, has finished eighth and ninth overall in his two prior World Championship tournaments and looks poised for another high finish in Las Vegas at 61 kg. First up for Humphrey is 2015 Asian Champion and 2011 World bronze medalist Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan.
“Reece Humphrey tells me this is the best he has ever felt,” said U.S. men’s freestyle coach Brandon Slay. “I can tell just by looking at him. He is smiling, joking around with his family right before the weigh-ins, so I’m excited about his energy level and ability to compete tomorrow.”
2013 Junior World champion Snyder will compete in his first senior level World Championships fresh of his freshman year of college at Ohio State University. The 19-year-old phenom will face 2013 World bronze medalist Pavlo Oliinyk of Ukraine in his first bout at 97 kg.
“Kyle Snyder is always ready for a battle,” said Slay. “I’m excited about our opportunity tomorrow.”
Joining Humphrey and Snyder on the big stage tomorrow is 2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert who has stormed through domestic competition at 86 kg in his first full season since competing at the 2012 Olympic Games. Herbert is slated to wrestle 2015 European Games bronze medalist Sandro Aminashvili of Georgia in the opening round tomorrow.
“Jake Herbert seems like he is being himself. He was full of passion and vigor and ready to get the party started tomorrow,” Slay said.
Action from day five of the World Championships will begin at 10 a.m. (PT).
