Spenser Mango of the USA, a two-time Olympian in Greco-Roman, will compete in the Salsa In the Square dual meet against Cuba as part of the Beat the Streets Gala week.

Over the next few days, TheMat.com will be taking a little closer look at each of the Beat the Streets “Salsa in the Square” matchups that will occur in Times Square on Thursday, May 21. Each of these previews will feature a biography of the wrestlers, as well as previous meetings on the mat.

We continue the previews today with U.S. men’s freestyle stars Jake Herbert and Kyle Snyder, as well as women’s freestyle star Clarissa Chun and Greco-Roman star Spenser Mango, along with their opponents in Times Square.

Men’s freestyle 86 kg/189 lbs. – Jake Herbert (USA) vs. Reineris Salas Perez (Cuba)

This should be a great match. Salas has won three World medals and Herbert is a past World silver medalist. Both wrestle an exciting style of wrestling, where points go up on the board when they are wrestling well. There is some history between them, as Salas beat Herbert, 4-0, 2-0 in the first round at the 2010 World Championships, and Herbert was eliminated when Salas failed to make the finals. Their other match was in the finals of the 2010 Cerro Pelado International in Cuba, a 3-1, 8-0 win for Salas. For sure, Herbert will be motivated to get some payback.

There is a big difference in recent achievements. Herbert was seventh at 2012 Olympic Games, falling short of his goals, and retired for the next two years. Salas did not compete in the 2012 Olympics at all, but continued to wrestle into the next Olympic cycle. He has been a World silver medalist the last two years, establishing himself as a favorite going into the 2016 Olympics. Herbert has returned on the mat and getting his form back, and had an encouraging effort in winning the U.S. Open a few days ago in Las Vegas.

Salas returned to the mat after a reported injury and entered the Freestyle World Cup in Los Angeles in April. He lost to American Ed Ruth in a wild 22-13 match, where Ruth came from behind and dominated the end of the bout. Salas withdrew from the rest of his matches. Herbert defeated Ruth in the U.S. Open semifinals, 13-11. See a trend here? Don’t be surprised to see a ton of points scored on the mat in Times Square when Herbert and Salas meet once again.

This is not Herbert’s first time at a Beat the Streets event. He lost to Russian Andrey Valiev, 1-3, 2-3 in Times Square in 2011. The main question is just how far has Herbert returned to his championship form of the last Olympic cycle? A healthy Salas will truly put him to the test. Expect this one to be both interesting and entertaining.

Men’s Freestyle 97 kg/213 lbs. – Kyle Snyder (USA) vs. Javier Cortina Lacerra (Cuba)

The big buzz out of Las Vegas at the U.S. Open was the emergence of Kyle Snyder at the Senior level. A 2013 Junior World champion and 2014 Junior World bronze medalist, Snyder was coming off his first NCAA season, in which he placed second at 197 for Ohio State. Taking no time off, Snyder went on to train with the Freestyle World Cup team, then entered the Open as a first big test as a Senior. Snyder knocked off Olympic champion Jake Varner in the finals, beat No. 2 Dustin Kilgore in the quarterfinals and 2014 NCAA champion J’den Cox in the semifinals. He showed a poise well beyond his years.

There is no history between Snyder and Cortina, which is not surprising, considering that Snyder is just now testing himself on the Senior level. However, when Snyder went to Cuba over a year ago for a Junior event and training, he worked out with Cortina. Although it is their first official match, they do have knowledge of each other based upon shared training. At the 2015 World Cup, Varner beat Cortina, 3-0, which gives them a common opponent.

Cortina placed fifth at the 2014 World Championships, then moved up to the bronze medal after the Turkish silver medalist tested positive for doping. He is big and strong and highly skilled, and will expect to beat Snyder based upon his experience and achievements. It will be important for Snyder to establish himself early in the match. Snyder is not afraid of wrestling against talented Senior stars. In last year’s Beat the Streets event, he scored first on Olympic and World champion Khadjimurat Gatsalov of Russia before losing 6-3. Snyder will not be phased at all by competing in Times Square or facing a Senior World medalist.

Women’s freestyle 48 kg/105.5 lbs. – Clarissa Chun (USA) vs. Yusneylis Guzman Lopez (Cuba)

World champion and Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun remains a top star in America’s most loaded women’s weight class. Chun had a win over two-time World medalist Alyssa Lampe earlier this season, but lost to Lampe at the U.S. Open before placing third. She is hoping to become the first three-time Olympian among U.S. Women, having made the 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams.

Chun not only has not wrestled Guzman, but she has never wrestled a Cuban. That is kind of surprising, considering how long she has been on the Senior level and the fact that she has wrestled in many events held in the Western hemisphere. Chun is excited to test herself against a Cuban.

Guzman is one of the emerging young Cuban wrestlers, as there is a strong push to develop their women’s team. She was third in the 2015 Pan American Junior Championships, losing to American Cody Pfau in a 0-10 technical fall. Pfau is competitive on the Senior level in the USA, but has not yet reached Chun’s competitive results. Guzman was also pinned in the 2015 Cerro Pelado International by Victoria Anthony of the USA, who also beat her by technical fall at the 2014 Cerro Pelado. Anthony ended up winning the 2015 U.S. Open and also beat Chun at the Dave Schultz Memorial. Based upon common opponents, Chun will be a heavy favorite.

Lopez is a generation younger than Chun and still making her name on the international level. According to National Coach Terry Steiner, the Cuban women are scrappy fighters who wrestle hard. We can expect that from Guzman, even if she has a big deficit in experience and technical skill. Both will be making their first Beat the Streets appearances.

Greco-Roman 59 kg/130 lbs. – Spenser Mango (USA) vs. Maykel Anache Lamouth (Cuba)

Spenser Mango is one of the veteran stars of international Greco-Roman, a two-time Olympian who has placed fifth in the last two World Championships. His opponent Maikel Anache is an emerging talent, a two-time Pan American Championships gold medalist who has yet to win a World medal. Mango was edged by Lamouth just a few weeks ago in the finals at the 2015 Pan American Championships down in Chile, a 3-1 win for the Cuban. Both have World rankings this month, Mango at No. 12 and Anache at No. 20.

Mango’s last match against a Cuban was at the 2012 Pan American Olympic Qualifier, where he lost to Javier Gonzalez, 0-1, 0-1. He also fell to a Cuban in the 60 kg finals of the 2009 Pan American Championships, when Hanzel Meoque beat him, 0-2, 0-2. Mango will have to find a way to score points on Anache, something that has been difficult in previous battles against Cuban opponents. When he is wrestling at his best, Mango is scoring points from both his feet and on the mat. This will be his challenge in Times Square.

Mango has wrestled in one Beat the Streets event, the Battle on the Intrepid on the U.S.S. Intrepid in 2009. He jumped up in weight to wrestle American Ellis Coleman, losing a 3-5, 1-6, 2-1 match. This time he takes on an international opponent and will be featured in Times Square. It will be a great setting for Mango to display his skills against a very worthy opponent.
