ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – The U.S. claimed two medal on the first day of the S.A. Lavrikov Greco-Roman Championships on Saturday.

Ryan Mango (Stanford, Calif./Stanford WC) won a silver medal at 59 kg/130 lbs. Mango finished the event with a 2-1 record, losing only in the finals by a 5-6 margin.

“Mango wrestled like a champion up until his last 15 seconds in his finals match where he made a mistake and lost the match,” said U.S. coach Jay Antonelli.

Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florid Jets) also finished 2-1 to capture the bronze medal, winning his third-place bout by pin.

“In Geordan's first match where he lost he looked very good. He pushed his opponent all over the mat but made two mistakes where he got thrown and it cost him the match. In his bronze medal match, he looked much better very aggressive made up for his mistakes and finished very very strong,” said Antonelli

Two other U.S. wrestlers competed on Saturday, but fell short of the medal rounds, Alejandro Sancho (Miami, Fla./New York AC/USOTS) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Jake Fisher (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 75 kg/165 lbs.

“Sancho got off to a slow start and got behind early. He finished strong but couldn't catch up,” said Antonelli. “Jake Fisher look very strong his first match but re-aggravated a rib injury. In Jake's second match. he wrestled the same person from the Belarus tournament. He wrestled very tough but had trouble with his injury in par terre defense.”

Joining Antonelli as a coach on the tour is Assistant USOTS Greco-Roman Coach Aghasi Manukyan.

Six more U.S. wrestlers will compete on Sunday.

Additional information will be provided when received.
