USA Wrestling to partner with The War of the Roses Series of girls folkstyle events in 2014

The growing War of the Roses Series of girls folkstyle wrestling events will be sanctioned with USA Wrestling in 2014 and expanded to a number of new locations.

The War of the Roses Series was founded two years ago by Brent Harvey of Michigan, who serves on USA Wrestling’s Women’s Age Group Council. This year, USA Wrestling and a number of its state associations will officially partner with the War of Roses on the promotion and presentation of these tournaments.

All competitors must have a current USA Wrestling membership card, which can be purchased online at http://www.usawmembership.com

All of the War of the Roses events are open to athletes from all states, and wrestlers are encouraged to enter as many as they would like. There will be divisions provided for athletes in elementary school, middle school and high school. In addition to folkstyle, some of the events will also have a freestyle division.

The tentative 2014 schedule includes 15 competitions in 11 different states, geographically distributed all around the nation.

“This series provides an outstanding opportunity at the age group levels for young girls around the country. Competition is a very important aspect of development. We need more of this at our age group levels. We thank Brent Harvey and his group for their leadership and efforts, and we support them 100%,” said National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.

The first War of the Roses event is the Badger Invitational and Open at Mary Bradford High School in Kenosha, Wis., January 5.

The War of the Roses series will conclude in 2014 at the newly created War of the Roses Grand Finale, at a site and date to be announced. This event will include folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions.

“I felt it was important that somebody step up and expand girls-only events. My family enjoyed competing at all-girl events in the past. I felt my daughters got more out of girls-only tournaments, both locally and nationally, than they got out of the rest of their wrestling season,” said Harvey.

A number of this year’s events will be hosted by the same local organizers who previously ran other girls folkstyle events which were not affiliated with USA Wrestling.

In 2013, there were four War of the Roses events held and sanctioned by USA Wrestling, with competition in Michigan, Tennessee, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Flyers on each of the events will be posted when the event is finalized. Information on the entire series will be posted when available on two locations:

This series of events will help athletes prepare for the major USA Wrestling national events for girls, including the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals and the Body Bar Women’s Nationals.

“As we continue to attract more girls into USA Wrestling with this series, our Regional and National events should grow significantly. If we put more USA Wrestling sanctioned all-girls events all over the country, it will expose them to the national opportunities. I would like to see our participation number grow every year,” said Harvey.
