The New York Athletic Club and the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation will make a special presentation in honor of the late Setrak Agonian prior to the men’s freestyle finals at the Bill Farrell Memorial International and the U.S. Non-Olympic Weight World Team Trials on Friday, November 11.

The freestyle finals are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the sixth floor gymnasium at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan, New York City.

Agonian, the 2003 USA Wrestling Man of the Year, passed away in August of 2014. He was a long-time wrestling leader on the international level as well as in the New York City area. Agonian was the founder of the Metropolitan Wrestling Association and a member of the New York Athletic Club.

Bulgarian wrestling federation president Valentin Jordanov, an Olympic champion and seven-time World champion, is expected to attend, as well as New York City resident Julieta Okot, who competed for Bulgaria and the United States during her competitive career. Dignitaries representing the Bulgarian consulate and the Armenian consulate, as well as New York City Council leaders are also expected to attend.

Jordanov will be presenting the $500 cash award to the MVP of the men’s freestyle tournament in honor of Set Agonian.

Agonian was a native of Bulgaria, before moving to the United States and becoming a U.S. citizen. Agonian became a successful businessman in New York City, as CEO and founder of International Creative Metals, Inc., makers of unique ornamental architechtural metal work.

Agonian’s first major wrestling assignment was to serve as U.S. assistant team leader and interpreter for the 1971 World Championships, held in Sofia, Bulgaria. He was recruited into the effort by the legendary Bill Farrell, who became one of Set’s best friends and supporters within wrestling. This international tournament is named in the honor of Bill Farrell, former NYAC Wrestling Chairman, 1972 Olympic coach and member of the UWW International Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Agonian was a key leader in the organization and presentation of the historic 2003 World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling, held in Madison Square Garden in New York City in September.

The 2001 World Championships in all three wrestling styles were awarded to New York, and Agonian was involved in all aspects of the event. After the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York City, the World Championships were moved to Europe. Agonian led the effort to bring the 2003 Freestyle Worlds back to New York, negotiating with Slovakian Wrestling Federation to allow the USA to host the event.

Agonian founded the Metropolitan Wrestling Association in 1984, which brought international wrestling competitions to New York, including dual meets between the United States and teams from the Soviet Union, Bulgaria and Armenia.

In addition, the New York Athletic Club will also honor its wrestling leaders John Lorenzi, Thomas Courtney and Larry Cantor prior to the freestyle finals on November 11.

The 2016 Bill Farrell Memorial International, previously known as the New York Athletic Club International, will feature competition in the six Olympic weight classes in each of the Olympic disciplines, men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. Top U.S. athletes, as well as competitors from many other nations, traditionally enter this prestigious event, which has been held for more than 50 years by the New York Athletic Club.

Added to the schedule this year is the 2016 U.S. Non-Olympic Weight World Team Trials, which will serve as the qualifying event for Team USA at the Non-Olympic Weight World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on December 10-11. Only wrestlers who meet U.S. citizenship requirements necessary for representing the USA in the World or Olympic Championships are eligible to participate in Non-Olympic Team Trials. The Non-Olympic weights are Greco-Roman (71 kg and 80 kg), Men's Freestyle (61 kg and 70 kg) and Women's Freestyle (55 kg and 60 kg).
