NEW YORK, N.Y. The finals have been established in Greco-Roman at the U.S. Non-Olympic Weights World Team Trials and at the Bill Farrell Memorial International, held at the New York Athletic Club on Friday.

In the U.S. Non-Olympic Weights World Team Trials, the finals matchup at 71 kg/156 lbs. will be Alejandro Sancho (Miami, Fla./NYAC/NMU) facing Chris Gonzalez (Bolingbrook, Ill./U.S. Army WCAP).

In the semifinals, No. 4 seed Gonzalez scored a big upset, stopping No. 1 seed and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up Pat Smith (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm), 4-1. Sancho, the No. 2 seed, got his offense untracked in an 8-0 technical fall over 2012 Olympian and No. 3 seed Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP), 8-0.

“Alex Sancho is the real deal. What makes him exciting is that he is technical from the feet, has good par terre and strong defense. He is strong in all three phases of wrestling. He has great throws and when he takes someone down, he turns him. He is more mature this year and it is showing. He can wrestle at the next level. If he puts it together tonight, he will make the team. He is confident in his wrestling,” said USOEC head coach Rob Hermann.

At 80 kg/176 lbs., the top two seeds reached the finals pairing for the U.S. Non-Olympic Weights World Team Trials when No. 1 Patrick Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) advanced to face No. 2 Jon Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP).

Martinez, a 2015 World Team member at this weight, stopped talented Kendrick Sanders, Homestead, Fla. (NYAC/NMU), 3-1. In the other semifinals, 2015 Pan American Games champion Anderson won by criteria over 2011 World Team member Cheney Haight (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC/USOTC), 1-1.

“Patrick is wrestling good. He is making minimal mistakes which he can fix. He is wrestling smart. In his finals matches against Jon, he needs to control the pace, wrestle his match and he will do fine,” said Olympian Robby Smith, who was coaching in Martinez’s corner.

Anderson won a gold medal at 85 kg/187.5 lbs. last November at the Bill Farrell International.

These athletes will compete in a best-of-three championship series, with the winner earning the World Team berth.

The winners in these two weight classes will compete for the United States at the Non-Olympic Weight World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on December 10-11.

In addition, the Greco-Roman gold medal and bronze-medal bouts have also been established for the Bill Farrell Memorial International, which includes action in the six Olympic weights. For the Bill Farrell event, the finals will be one match.

Six U.S. wrestlers have reached the championship finals. Included is an all-USA finals between Hayden Zillmer of the Minnesota Storm against G’Angelo Hancock of the New York AC at 98 kg/215 lbs. Hancock is No. 3 on the Greco-Roman national team at 98 kg/213 lbs., while Zillmer made the No. 3 spot on the Greco-Roman national team at 85 kg/187.5 lbs.

There is also an all-international finals at 85 kg/187.25 lbs. between 2009 World bronze medalist Aliaksandr Kikiniou of Belarus and Alan Vera of Cuba. Vera lives and trains in Florida with the Florida Jets.

The championship finals are set for 6:30 p.m. Eastern time tonight. All of the action will be broadcast live on Flowrestling.
