Woods, Melendez, Lewan, Wohlabaugh among top high school champs at USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals

Real Woods of Illinois, the 126-pound champion in the 11th-12th grade division, was the Outstanding Wrestler at the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals on Saturday. He was awarded with the OW trophy by tournament director Brian Keck.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Real Woods of Izzy Style School of Wrestling (IL) was named Outstanding Wrestler in the Grade 11-12 high school division at the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday.
There were 816 competitors in the 11-12th grade division and 657 wrestlers in the 9-10th grade division, for a total of 1,473 high school athletes on the mats today. The event was webcast live by Trackcast.
Woods won the 126 pound weight class, defeating Izzy Style teammate Zach Villareal in the finals, 10-0. Woods scored a first-period takedown, added a reversal and two-point tilt in the second and added four more third-period points for the dominant win.
Woods was a 2016 UWW Cadet Nationals champion, and is currently ranked No. 9 at 126 by Flowrestling. In the semifinals, he beat Ohio star Drew Mattin, a Junior Nationals All-American in 2015 and 2016, by a 3-0 margin. Mattin holds a No. 18 ranking by Flowrestling at 120 pounds.
At 113 pounds in the 11-12th grade division, Joey Melendez of Izzy Style Wrestling (IL) won a tight 3-2 match in the finals over Kansas state champion Jace Koelzer of the Olathe South Falcons. Melendez holds a No. 5 ranking by Flowrestling at 113 pounds. An Illinois state champion and 2015 Cadet National All-American, Melendez won the Preseason Nationals for the second straight year after claiming a gold in the 9th-10th grade division last year.
Scoring a takedown with just eight seconds left in the overtime sudden victory period, Will Lewan of Izzy Style (IL) edged Minnesota star Tyler Eischens of PINnacle, 3-1 at 145 pounds. Lewan, ranked No. 8 at 145 pounds by Flowrestling, was a Preseason Nationals runner-up last year in the 9th-10th grade division. Lewan was a Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion and third in freestyle in Fargo last summer.
Another nationally ranked star won the title at 170 pounds, Max Wohlabaugh of the Florida Jets (FL), who stopped Zachary Braunagel of Southern Illinois Wrestling (IL) in the finals, 5-0. Wohlabaugh scored all of his points in the second period, with an escape, takedown then two-point turn for five big points. Wohlabaugh is ranked No. 4 by Flowrestling at 160 pounds, and was a Junior Nationals runner-up in both freestyle and Greco-Roman last summer.
Another nationally ranked star was the heavyweight champion, Ohio’ Kevin Vough of Elyria, who scored a takedown on the edge in sudden-victory overtime to beat Spencer Trenary of Team Valley of Iowa. Vough is ranked No. 5 by Flowrestling at 285 pounds, was a Junior Nationals freestyle runner-up last year and a 2014 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion.
Trenary had an ironman performance on Saturday. A 2016 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion, also wrestled in the 9th-10th grade division, where he won the title at 285 pounds, beating Tyler Delooff of Lowell WC (MI), by a 4-0 margin.
Winning a Preseason Nationals title for the second straight year was Jackson Henson of MRTC (WV), who won the 132 pound title, scoring an escape in a 1-0 win over Carlos Champagne of Region Wrestling Academy (IN). Henson, son of World champion and Olympic medalist Sam Henson, was a winner in the 9th-10th grade division last year.
Scoring the lone pin in the finals in the 11th-12 division was Nick Casperson of Legends of Gold (SD), who put awa Justin Johnson of Oklahoma in 41 seconds at 182 pounds. After an early takedown, Casperson turned and pinned Johnson quickly.
Other individual champions in the 11th-12th grade division were Justin Cardani of Centennial at 106 pounds (IL), Tommy Hoskins of LCA (OH) at 120 pounds, Jacob Greenwood of GRIT Athletics Wrestling Club (CO) at 138 pounds, Austin Braun of Woodbury (MN)at 152 pounds, Braeden Redlin of Texas Best Trained Elite Wrestling (TX) at 160 pounds, Blake Reynolds (PA) at 195 pounds and Slade Sifuentes of Team Valley (IA) at 220 pounds.
The 9th-10th grade division also had some great finals action. Perhaps the most competitive finals came at 106 pounds, where Mick Burnett of Burnett Trained Wrestling (OH) edged Eric Barnett of Team Wisconsin, 3-2. Burnett, a Central Regional Schoolboy champion last year, stopped Barnett, a Cadet Nationals All-American who holds a No. 16 ranking from Flowrestling.
Perhaps the top competitor in the 9th-10th grade division was the 120 pound champion Dylan D`Emilio of Burnett Trained Wrestling (OH), who defeated Aden Reeves of Young Bucks (IA), 5-1. D’Emilio scored a takedown and turn in the first period and led the entire way. Flowrestling has D’Emilio, a 2015 Cadet World Team member and Cadet Nationals champion, ranked No. 13 at 126 pounds.
It was a good day for the Henson family of West Virginia with two individual champions. Joining his brother Jackson Henson as champion was Wyatt Henson of MRTC (WV), who defeat Kai Orine of Team Missouri Select in the finals of the 9th-10th grade division at 113 pounds. Henson scored a takedown in sudden victory overtime for a 3-1 win.
The USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals concludes on Sunday with the girls high school division, as well as the youth-level divisions.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Real Woods of Izzy Style School of Wrestling (IL) was named Outstanding Wrestler in the Grade 11-12 high school division at the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday.
There were 816 competitors in the 11-12th grade division and 657 wrestlers in the 9-10th grade division, for a total of 1,473 high school athletes on the mats today. The event was webcast live by Trackcast.
Woods won the 126 pound weight class, defeating Izzy Style teammate Zach Villareal in the finals, 10-0. Woods scored a first-period takedown, added a reversal and two-point tilt in the second and added four more third-period points for the dominant win.
Woods was a 2016 UWW Cadet Nationals champion, and is currently ranked No. 9 at 126 by Flowrestling. In the semifinals, he beat Ohio star Drew Mattin, a Junior Nationals All-American in 2015 and 2016, by a 3-0 margin. Mattin holds a No. 18 ranking by Flowrestling at 120 pounds.
At 113 pounds in the 11-12th grade division, Joey Melendez of Izzy Style Wrestling (IL) won a tight 3-2 match in the finals over Kansas state champion Jace Koelzer of the Olathe South Falcons. Melendez holds a No. 5 ranking by Flowrestling at 113 pounds. An Illinois state champion and 2015 Cadet National All-American, Melendez won the Preseason Nationals for the second straight year after claiming a gold in the 9th-10th grade division last year.
Scoring a takedown with just eight seconds left in the overtime sudden victory period, Will Lewan of Izzy Style (IL) edged Minnesota star Tyler Eischens of PINnacle, 3-1 at 145 pounds. Lewan, ranked No. 8 at 145 pounds by Flowrestling, was a Preseason Nationals runner-up last year in the 9th-10th grade division. Lewan was a Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion and third in freestyle in Fargo last summer.
Another nationally ranked star won the title at 170 pounds, Max Wohlabaugh of the Florida Jets (FL), who stopped Zachary Braunagel of Southern Illinois Wrestling (IL) in the finals, 5-0. Wohlabaugh scored all of his points in the second period, with an escape, takedown then two-point turn for five big points. Wohlabaugh is ranked No. 4 by Flowrestling at 160 pounds, and was a Junior Nationals runner-up in both freestyle and Greco-Roman last summer.
Another nationally ranked star was the heavyweight champion, Ohio’ Kevin Vough of Elyria, who scored a takedown on the edge in sudden-victory overtime to beat Spencer Trenary of Team Valley of Iowa. Vough is ranked No. 5 by Flowrestling at 285 pounds, was a Junior Nationals freestyle runner-up last year and a 2014 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion.
Trenary had an ironman performance on Saturday. A 2016 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion, also wrestled in the 9th-10th grade division, where he won the title at 285 pounds, beating Tyler Delooff of Lowell WC (MI), by a 4-0 margin.
Winning a Preseason Nationals title for the second straight year was Jackson Henson of MRTC (WV), who won the 132 pound title, scoring an escape in a 1-0 win over Carlos Champagne of Region Wrestling Academy (IN). Henson, son of World champion and Olympic medalist Sam Henson, was a winner in the 9th-10th grade division last year.
Scoring the lone pin in the finals in the 11th-12 division was Nick Casperson of Legends of Gold (SD), who put awa Justin Johnson of Oklahoma in 41 seconds at 182 pounds. After an early takedown, Casperson turned and pinned Johnson quickly.
Other individual champions in the 11th-12th grade division were Justin Cardani of Centennial at 106 pounds (IL), Tommy Hoskins of LCA (OH) at 120 pounds, Jacob Greenwood of GRIT Athletics Wrestling Club (CO) at 138 pounds, Austin Braun of Woodbury (MN)at 152 pounds, Braeden Redlin of Texas Best Trained Elite Wrestling (TX) at 160 pounds, Blake Reynolds (PA) at 195 pounds and Slade Sifuentes of Team Valley (IA) at 220 pounds.
The 9th-10th grade division also had some great finals action. Perhaps the most competitive finals came at 106 pounds, where Mick Burnett of Burnett Trained Wrestling (OH) edged Eric Barnett of Team Wisconsin, 3-2. Burnett, a Central Regional Schoolboy champion last year, stopped Barnett, a Cadet Nationals All-American who holds a No. 16 ranking from Flowrestling.
Perhaps the top competitor in the 9th-10th grade division was the 120 pound champion Dylan D`Emilio of Burnett Trained Wrestling (OH), who defeated Aden Reeves of Young Bucks (IA), 5-1. D’Emilio scored a takedown and turn in the first period and led the entire way. Flowrestling has D’Emilio, a 2015 Cadet World Team member and Cadet Nationals champion, ranked No. 13 at 126 pounds.
It was a good day for the Henson family of West Virginia with two individual champions. Joining his brother Jackson Henson as champion was Wyatt Henson of MRTC (WV), who defeat Kai Orine of Team Missouri Select in the finals of the 9th-10th grade division at 113 pounds. Henson scored a takedown in sudden victory overtime for a 3-1 win.
The USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals concludes on Sunday with the girls high school division, as well as the youth-level divisions.
