GUELPH, Canada – At least 10 U.S. Senior-level women’s freestyle wrestlers will compete at the Canada Cup on Saturday.
Among the U.S. women competing are 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion Tamyra Mensah (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) at 69 kg/152 lbs. and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
Mensah, a WCWA women’s college nationals champion from Wayland Baptist Univ. who took an Olympic redshirt year, is coming off her best season. She won the 2016 U.S. Open in Las Vegas and claimed the Olympic Trials title in Iowa City. Mensah competed in three Olympic Games qualifying events for the USA but was unable to qualify the weight class for the Rio Games.
Anthony was fifth in the 2013 World Championships, and was a two-time Junior World champion. She was a 2015 U.S. Open champion. Anthony was a four-time WCWA Women’s college champion for Simon Fraser Univ. She placed second at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials this year in Iowa City. Anthony has been a member of the U.S. Women’s Senior National Team for five straight years.
Two other members of the 2016-17 U.S. Senior Women’s National Team will compete at the Canada Cup, Randi Beltz (Chesterfield, Mo./Titan Mercury WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Mallory Velte (Sacramento, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Both are ranked No. 3 in their weight class on the national team, based upon their third-place finishes at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Beltz is competing up a weight class. Velte was a member of the U.S. Junior World Team a year ago.
The other U.S. athletes competing in Canada are nationally ranked on the Senior level and have been successful on the domestic and international circuit.
This tournament is open to other American athletes, so it is possible that other U.S. women, representing their club programs, may participate in the Canada Cup tournament.
The U.S. National Women’s National Team, including some members of the U.S. Olympic Team, have been in Canada in a joint international training camp with members of the Canadian National Team this past week.
