U.S. tops Sweden 9-3 in Greco-Roman dual at NMU Superior Camp

MARQUETTE, Mich. —Team USA faced Sweden in a Greco-Roman wrestling dual meet on Wed. at the Northern Michigan University Superior Dome. Team USA, which came out on top 9-3, was comprised of NMU Olympic Training Site athletes and athletes visiting NMU for the Superior International Wrestling Camp.
Team USA had a swift victory as wrestling camp participants Leonard Merkin (72 kg), Kamal Bey (76 kg), Nick Reenen (85 kg), Tracy Hancock (100 kg) and Michael Rodgers (120 kg) all finished their matches by pinning their opponents.
NMU-OTS participants on Team USA started off their portion of the meet with Randon Miranda of Palmdale, Calif. facing Albin Jonsson in the 54 kg match. Miranda earned a victory by tech fall 8-0 to start things off for the NMU athletes.
NMU’s Dalton Roberts of Flowerville, Mich. faced Anton Rosen at 58 kg. He finished round one up 2- 0 and won by technical fall in the second to finish the match 11-1.
At 69 kg, NMU’s Jamal DeArmond of Sacramento, Calif. faced Simon Sjostrom. DeArmond finished his match, also by technical fall, 10-0, in the first period.
Austin Chaon, of Geneva, Ill., was the final NMU athlete to compete. Chaon faced a tough Hapus Svensson at 80 kg, losing in the first period by technical fall 8-0.
