Leathers wins silver, Anthony and Mensah get bronze among USA women at Spanish Grand Prix

MADRID, Spain – Three U.S. women won medals, helping lead the USA to a second place team finish at the Grand Prix of Spain on Sunday.
Claiming a silver medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. was 2015 Junior World bronze medalist Becka Leathers (Choctaw, Okla./Titan Mercury WC). Leathers was defeated in the finals by 2016 Russian National champion and 2013 Junior World bronze medalist Olga Khoroshavtseva of Russia, 10-0.
Leathers opened with a pair of pins over Giulia Penalver de Olivera of Brazil and Graciela Sanchez of Spain.
Leathers, a WCWA college national champion for Oklahoma City University, will return to the Junior Worlds this year, seeking another medal.
Capturing bronze medals were 2013 World Team member Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion Tamyra Mensah (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) at 69 kg/152 lbs.
Anthony won her first two bouts by technical fall over Brenda Yamileth Bailey of Honduras and Vinesh of India. She fell in the semifinals to 209 Junior World champion Valeriia Chepsarakova of Russia, 2-2, who went on to win the title. In her bronze-medal match, Anthony scored an impressive 14-2 technical fall over 2015 World bronze medalist Jessica Blaszka of the Netherlands.
Anthony, who was a two-time Junior World champion, was a Canada Cup champion earlier this summer.
Mensah had a strong start, defeating Dalma Caneva of Italy, 2-0 and Khourshed of Egypt, 7-6. In the semifinals, she was pinned by 2012 Olympic champion and 2015 World champion Natalia Vorobeva of Russia. She received the bronze medal against 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Agnieszka Wieszczek-Kordus of Poland.
Four young U.S. women stars reached bronze medal matches and lost there, placing fifth in the standings: Jacarra Winchester (San Leandro, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 58 kg/128 lbs., Maya Nelson (Denver, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Mallory Velte (Sacramento, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. –
Miracle, a 2014 Junior World bronze medalist, as well as Nelson, will also compete at the 2016 Junior World Championships.
Russia won the team title with 66 points, followed by the United States with 43 points and Sweden with 33 points. There were 34 nations which scored points in the women's division.
With the three women’s freestyle medals, the United States won six medals during the week, men’s freestyle golds from James Green at 70 kg and David Taylor at 86 kg and a Greco-Roman bronze from Patrick Martinez at 80 kg.
