Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Campbellsville University) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on February 13, 2018.
Miracle, a senior for the Tigers, became the fourth woman to win four WCWA national titles with a superb showing in Oklahoma City over the weekend. Moreover, her triumph was instrumental in Campbellsville earning its first WCWA team title in program history.
To claim the 136-pound individual title, top-seeded Miracle compiled a 4-0 record, earning three pins and a technical fall along the way. Her final against No. 2 Desiree Zavala of Grays Harbor College was the last bout of the tournament and ultimately determined the team champion.
While leading 8-2 late in the championship tussle, Miracle pinned Zavala to cap off her career, simultaneously pushing Campbellsville ahead of Simon Fraser in the team race. She was named WCWA Wrestler of the Year for her efforts this season.
Miracle joins Simon Fraser's Victoria Anthony and Helen Maroulis, both of whom are currently top international stars for Team USA, and Oklahoma City's Emily Webster as the only women to win four WCWA championships.
Throughout her career Miracle has represented the U.S. at six World Championship events across the various age divisions. Most recently, Miracle finished in fifth place at the newly-established U23 World Championships held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, last November. She is a two-time bronze-medal winner at the Junior World Championships.
Miracle earned four international medals in 2017, highlighted by her win at the Dave Schultz Memorial International in November. She also picked up a silver medal in the January-edition Dave Schultz tournament, plus bronze medals at the Pan American Championships and Grand Prix of Spain.
Domestically, Miracle finished in second place at last year's U.S. World Team Trials to Maroulis, the eventual World champion. In addition, she won gold at the Women's University Nationals and U23 World Team Trials.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
