Drew Bennett (Fort Dodge, Iowa/Fort Dodge HS) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on November 1, 2017.
It was an exceptional weekend for Bennett at the 2017 USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals held at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The University of Northern Iowa commit ran through the 126-pound weight class in the 11th-12th grade division, taking first place.
Over the course of the competition, Bennett won six bouts, including one 46-second pin and a 13-0 major decision. He defeated Oklahoma talent Colt Newton 5-1 in the championship match. He was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler award for his efforts.
Bennett finished in fourth place at the event last season. He was an Iowa Junior freestyle state champion and Greco-Roman runner-up in 2017, and has qualified to compete at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals held in Fargo, N.D. as part of Team Iowa the past two years.
On the high school level, Bennett has placed third at the IHSAA State Championships the past two seasons for Fort Dodge High School.
Bennett is ranked No. 17 at 113 pounds in the Intermat High School Rankings. He recently announced his intentions to wrestle at the next level for Coach Doug Schwab at UNI.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
