Peyton Robb (Medford, Minn./Pinnacle) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on July 10, 2017.
Robb was unquestionably the most dominant wrestler at the 2017 Cadet Pan American Championships after picking up gold medals in both men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman, boasting gaudy stats across the board.
The Minnesota native began with a clean sweep of the 60 kg/152 lbs. Greco-Roman bracket in Buenos Aires, Argentina last Friday. Robb defeated all three of his foes by technical fall with an 8-0 victory over Venezuela’s Hector Rodriguez Benitez in the gold-medal match solidifying his place atop the weight.
He followed the Greco-Roman tournament up with a similar thrashing of the men’s freestyle field on Sunday. Robb downed all three of his opponents by 10-0 scores to win his second title of the weekend. His freestyle final was quickly decided over Canada’s Adam Scott.
All told, Robb combined to win six matches at the Cadet Pan American Championships across both styles, all by technical fall, and outscoring his opponents 57-0. To add even more perspective to Robb’s run, he did not face an opponent from the same country more than once, a unique tidbit for an athlete competing in both styles at this event.
It has been a banner year for Robb in the international styles. He was named to the Junior Duals All-Tournament Team in both Greco-Roman and freestyle after going undefeated throughout. At the UWW Cadet Nationals in Akron, Ohio, Robb earned a third-place finish in Greco-Roman and runner-up spot in freestyle. He was also a Northern Plains champion this year in both styles.
Robb has earned three All-American honors at the USA Wrestling Cadet Nationals held annually in Fargo, N.D. He finished in fifth place in both freestyle and Greco-Roman last summer, and was a Greco-Roman runner-up in 2015.
Robb is a two-time Minnesota high school state champion and three-time state finalist entering his senior season for Owatonna. He has committed to attend South Dakota State University in the fall of 2018 where he will wrestle for head coach Chris Bono and company.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
