by Craig Sesker USA Wrestling
Tony Ramos (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Ramos capped an amazing run by capturing a U.S. World Team Trials freestyle title at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. on Saturday at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis.
Ramos swept Olympian and U.S. Open champion Sam Hazewinkel 4-0 and 5-4 in the best-of-3 final series. Ramos advances to September’s World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The No. 4 seed in the Challenge Tournament, Ramos opened with a 9-5 win over Dan Mitcheff in the quarterfinals. He followed by defeating 2013 World Team member Angel Escobedo 2-0 in the semis and then edged 2013 University World Team member Nico Megaludis 1-0 in the Challenge finals.
It has been quite a year for Ramos, who won NCAA and Big Ten titles for the first time as an Iowa Hawkeye senior in 2014.
Ramos is joined on the 2014 World Team by former Iowa teammate Brent Metcalf, who made his third World Team.
Ramos is a past U.S. Junior World Team member.
