Elena Pirozhkova named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of July 1-7.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Pirozhkova won a gold medal at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. at the Grand Prix of Spain on July 6. She was the only American champion, and helped lead the USA team to a first-place finish at this prestigious event.
Pirozhkova went 3-0 for the day including a 3-1 win over tough Hanna Johansson of Sweden in the finals. Her other victories were over Yulia Prontsevich of Russia, 10-0 and Maryia Mamashuk of Belarus, 3-1.
Pirozhkova was a 2012 World champion and three-time World medalist, and competed on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team.
