Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa./Penn State University) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Ruth won a battle of returning NCAA champions by downing Cornell's Steve Bosak 7-3 in the 184-pound finals of the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Ruth, a junior, has bumped up to 184 this season after winning the 174-pound NCAA title in 2012. Bosak won an NCAA title at 184 last year.
The top-ranked Ruth placed third at the 2011 NCAAs as a freshman, and has been a member of two NCAA championship teams for the top-ranked Nittany Lions.
Ruth has won 50 consecutive matches.
