Franich, Gould, Reyna win Armed Forces Championships titles in women’s freestyle

BREMERTON, Wash. – The Armed Forces Wrestling Championships had three weight classes of women’s freestyle competition on Saturday at Naval Base Kitsap.
In a weight class with representatives from all three of the participating branches, SRA Haley Franich of the U.S. Air Force won the title at 55 kg. In a round-robin competition, Franich scored a 10-0 technical fall over Coast Guard athlete PO3 Joanalicia Ramirez of the U.S. Navy team, 10-0. She secured the title with a pin in 36 seconds over SPC Estrella Dorado Marin of the U.S. Army. Dorado Marin won the silver with a 10-0 technical fall over Ramirez.
The other two weight classes featured a best-of-three series between two athletes.
At 53 kg, SPC Aleeah Gould of U.S. Army defeated SRA Mariah Anderson of the U.S. Air Force in two straight matches. Gould won bout one by a 10-0 technical fall, then took bout two, 7-0/
At 62 kg, SPC Brenda Reyna of the U.S. Army swept her best-of-three series, beating PO2 Genisis Ramirez of the U.S. Navy, with a pair of 10-0 technical falls.
As women’s wrestling continues to grow at all levels, this marked the most women’s freestyle participants at the Armed Forces Championships in history.
