VomBaur tops Yi in Div. C showdown, as five 2022 double champions win Masters Greco-Roman titles

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The first day of Masters Nationals action featured Greco-Roman, with a full day of high-level action at the South Point Arena on Wednesday. It is one of the events from the 2023 Pritchard Companies U.S. Open, presented by FloWrestling.
Returning double champion Ben VomBaur of Bear Cave WC won the 62 kg Div. C title in a round robin weight class, which included returning double champion David Yi of Mad Cow WC, who finished second. VomBaur won his first-round match over Yi, 7-4. Last year, VomBaur won this weight in Div. B, while Yi, a World double champion, won the weight in Div. C.
Other 2022 Masters double champions who won Greco-Roman titles today were James Medeiros of California (100 kg, Div. B), Kevin Pine of the Las Vegas WC (88 kg, Div. D) and Charles Jones of Nevada (100 kg, Div. E). Pine was a Veterans World freestyle champion last year. Jones was an NCAA Div. I champion for Purdue in college.
Additional repeat Greco-Roman champions from last year were Andrei Stashonak of New York (Div. C 78 kg), Travis Wiuff of Minnesota (Div. C 130 kg), Ernesto Alarcon of Mad Cow WC (Div. D 78 kg), Gelu Bors of Las Vegas WC (Div. D 100) and William Newton of California (Div. E 78 kg)
Two other past Veterans World champions to claim Greco-Roman titles today were Rob Prebish of the Richmond WC (Div. D 62 kg) and Petros Petrosyan of Orange County Grappling (Div. E 88 kg).
Every year, some successful wrestlers make a return to the sport and take home some hardware. Winning the Div. B title at 58 kg was past Utah Valley star Ben Kjar of BUVRTC.
The Mad Cow WC won the Masters Greco-Roman team title with 146 points, followed by the Las Vegas WC with 129 points and the Chicago WC with 126 points.
The Masters wrestlers return on Thursday to compete in freestyle, with double titles up for grabs for 2023.
