CORALVILLE, Iowa – Final X 2022 has been completely determined, based upon the results of the final session at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament on Sunday.

On Sunday night, 14 weight classes had a best-of-three series on Sunday night, with only the winner advancing to Final X, where they will face a 2021 World medalist who had already qualified for Final X. In the first session Sunday morning, the two semifinal winners at 16 other weight classes also advanced to compete in Final X.

Tonight’s best of three series included seven weights in men’s freestyle, six in women’s freestyle and one in Greco-Roman.

Of the 14 series, 11 were finished in two-match sweeps, while three series went the full three matches.

Men’s freestyle summaries

Vito Arujau of Spartan Combat WC/TMWC was dominant in winning the 57 kg series, beating Jakob Camacho with two straight technical falls. Arujau quickly took down Camacho and turned him with an ankle lace multiple times for a 10-0 win. In the second match, Arujau also got his offense rolling, and finished off a 13-0 technical fall with a four-point lift. Arujau, a 2020 U.S. Open champion and 2019 Junior World silver medalist, is a current All-American student-athlete at Cornell. Arujau will battle 2021 World champion Thomas Gilman in Final X Stillwater

Seth Gross of the Sunkist Kids, the past NCAA champion who started as a No. 5 seed, scored a two-match sweep over No. 6 seed Daniel Deshazer of the Gopher WC RTC at 61 kg. Gross was in control in the first match, scoring the first six points in a 6-2 win. The second match was more of a close scrap. Gross led 4-1, but a four-point throw by Deshazer gave him a 5-4 lead. Gross scored the next five points to lead 9-5, and a late rally by Deshazer fell short with Gross winning 9-8. Gross will battle 2021 World silver medalist Daton Fix in Final X Stillwater.

At 74 kg, Jason Nolf of Nittany Lion WC/TMWC scored a pair of technical fall victories over Joey Lavallee of the Lehigh Valley WC/TMWC. Nolf, who won three NCAA titles for Penn State and has been on the Senior National Team, won the first match 12-1. In the second period, Lavallee scored the first two points, then Nolf came back to lead 4-2 at the break. Nolf turned Lavallee three times after a second period takedown to close out the technical fall. Nolf will face three-time World champion Kyle Dake of Spartan Combat RTC/TMWC in Final X New York.

In the only men’s freestyle series to go three bouts, Chance Marsteller of Titan Mercury WC beat Vincenzo Joseph two matches to one at 79 kg. Marsteller opened with a solid 4-0 decision over Joseph, but Joseph rallied in the second match to win 6-2. In the deciding third match, with each wrestler giving up a shot clock point (and Marsteller holding criteria), Marsteller scored on an ankle pick to lead 3-1. Marsteller was penalized with a fleeing caution to make it 3-2. With two seconds left, Marsteller hip tossed Joseph for four points and a 7-2 win. Marsteller will battle five-time World champion Jordan Burroughs in Final X New York.

In a battle of long-time competitors, Zahid Valencia of the Sunkist Kids defeated Mark Hall of the Pennsylvania RTC/TMWC in two straight bouts at 86 kg, not allowing Hall to score a point. Valencia won the first bout 6-0, then came back with a 10-0 technical fall in the second match. Valencia won two NCAA titles for Arizona State and Hall won for Penn State. Valencia will battle 2020 Olympic champion and 2018 World champion David Taylor of the Nittany Lion WC/TMWC in Final X New York.

Qualifying for Final X Stillwater at 92 kg was Nathan Jackson of New York AC/NJRTC, who won two straight matches over NC State student athlete Isaac Trumble of the Wolfpack RTC/TMWC. Jackson did not allow a point. He secured a 10-0 technical fall in the first match in just 41 seconds, turning Trumble repeatedly. In the second match, Jackson scored on a four-point move and two takedowns for an 8-0 win. Jackson will battle two-time World champion and Olympic medalist J’den Cox in Final X Stillwater.

Past Ohio State star Kollin Moore of the Ohio RTC/TMWC shut out 2022 U.S. Open champions Michael Macchiavello of the Wolfpack WC/TMWC in two straight at 97 kg. Moore won the first bout in a 10-0 technical fall. In bout two, Moore had two takedowns, a step out and a shot clock point to win 6-0. Moore was second at the 2020 Olympic Trials and the 2021 World Team Trials. He will battle 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Kyle Snyder in Final X Stillwater.

Women’s freestyle summaries

Two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe of Sunkist Kids reached Final X with a two match sweep over Erin Golston of the NYAC at 50 kg. Lampe won the first match in a tight 10-9 decision at 50 kg. Lampe jumped to a strong start, with a 9-5 lead at the break. Golston battled back to tie it at 9-9, but Lampe forced a step out for the winning point. In the second match, Lampe scored on a step out, then took down Golston. Lampe powered her over to her back and secured the pin in 1:07 to end the series. Lampe will battle 2021 World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt in Final X New York.

2019 World champion and 2020 Olympian Jacarra Winchester of USOPTC/TMWC earned her Final X berth with a two-match sweep over former Simon Fraser All-American Lauren Mason of Brunson UVRTC at 55 kg. Winchester dominated the first match in a 10-0 technical fall. In the second match, Mason gave a tough fight, scoring on three straight takedowns to tie it at 6-6 and hold criteria. Winchester scored the next takedown, then took Mason to her back where she was fighting to avoid a fall when time ended, making it 10-6. Winchester will battle 2021 World bronze medalist Jenna Burkert in Final X Stillwater.

Winning a close two-match series at 57 kg is U.S. Open champion Alex Hedrick of the USOPTC/TMWC over Cameron Guerin of McKendree Bearcat WC/TMWC. Hedrick won both matches by just one point, stopping Guerin 2-1 in the first match, then securing a 7-6 win in the second point. Hedrick advances to Final X New York, where she draws 2016 Olympic champion and three-time World champion Helen Maroulis.

Three-time U.S. Open champion Jennifer Rogers of the Nittany Lion WC/TMWC won twice by injury default over five-time age-group World medalist Macey Kilty of the Sunkist Kids. In match one, just 31 seconds into the bout, Kilty injured an arm and could not continue. Kilty was also unable to compete in bout two. It was unfortunate for Kilty, who could not complete the 2020 Olympic Trials finals series win an injury. Rogers will battle 2021 World silver medalist Kayla Miracle of the Sunkist Kids in Final X New York.

In one of the biggest current rivalries in women’s wrestling, 2018 World bronze medalist Mallory Velte of Beaver Dam RTC/TMWC won the third and deciding match to defeat Emma Bruntil of the USOPTC/TMWC, two bouts to one at 65 kg. Velte opened with a 5-2 win, but Bruntil turned Velte for two points with just three seconds on the clock to win the second bout, 3-2. In the third match, Velte jumped to a 2-0 lead at the break on a step out and a shot clock point. In the second period, Bruntil was hit with a caution and also gave up a step out to lead 4-0. A late takedown gave Velte the 6-0 victory. Velte will face 2021 World bronze medalist Forrest Molinari in Final X Stillwater.

Sienna Ramirez, a college star at Southern Oregon, needed three matches to edge former Menlo star Solin Piearcy in the 68 kg finals series. All three matches were ties, determined by criteria. Ramirez won the first match, 4-4, but Piearcy rebounded for a 2-2 win in bout two. In the final match, Ramirez opened with a four-point whipover throw to lead 4-0, and stretched her lead to 6-0. Piearcy battled back to tie it at 6-6, but Ramirez won with the highest-point move, her four-pointer. Ramirez will battle 2020 Olympic champion Tamyra Mensah Stock in Final X Stillwater.
