TULSA, Okla. – They said it would be a dog fight for the 2022 Big 12 Wrestling Championships title, and the first session, which included preliminaries and quarterfinals, proved it to be exactly so.

Returning champion Oklahoma State holds a two-point lead over Northern Iowa after the first session, 57 points to 55 points. Iowa State is just one point behind Northern Iowa at 54 points. Missouri is 13.5 points behind the Cyclones at 40.5 points.

The Cowboys are moving into the semifinals with five wrestlers (by seed): No. 4 Trevor Mastrogiovanni (125), No. 1 Daton Fix (133), No. 1 Kaden Gfeller (149), No. 1 Dustin Plott (174), No. 4 Dakota Geer (184) and No. 7 Luke Surber (285).

Two big quarterfinal losses for Oklahoma State came in the middle weights, when No. 3 seed Wyatt Sheets was beaten by No. 6 Justin Thomas, 3-2 in overtime tiebreaker at 157 pounds, and No. 4 seed Travis Wittlake fell to No. 5 seed Luke Weber of North Dakota State, 4-0 at 165 pounds. However, Surber’s sudden victory win in overtime over No. 2 seed Zach Elam of Missouri in the last match of the session moved the Cowboys ahead of the Panthers.

Northern Iowa placed six into the semifinals, No. 3 Brody Teske (125), No. 2 Kyle Biscoglia (133), No. 5 Colin Realbuto (149), No. 3 Austin Yant (165), No. 4 Lance Runyon (174) and No. 1 Parker Keckeisen (184). The Panthers wrestle Oklahoma State three times in the semifinals (149, 174 and 184).

Iowa State also has six in the semifinals: No. 5 Ramazan Attasauov (133), No. 3 Jarrett Degen (149), No. 1 David Carr (157), No. 2 Marcus Coleman (184), No. 4 Yonger Bastida (197) and No. 3 Sam Schuyler (285). They wrestle Oklahoma State twice in the semifinals (133 and 285).

Session II begins at 5:00 p.m. Central time, and includes the semifinals and two rounds or consolations. The session will be live on XII Now/ESPN+
