TULSA, Okla. – Want to talk about the growth of girls wrestling? Just check out this year’s 14U Girls National Duals, being held alongside the Junior National Duals for the second straight year.
This event showed a huge increase in participation since last year when there were three teams which competed in both freestyle and Greco-Roman, with Pennsylvania winning both styles. This year, the tournament features 13 teams, split into two large preliminary pools.
The champions of Pool A was returning champion Pennsylvania, which swept all six of its dual meets in a pool of seven. Pennsylvania did not have a close dual meet all day, with no opponent getting closer than 26 team points in their dual meet.
The champion of Pool B was Wisconsin, which had a perfect 5-0 record in their pool of six. Wisconsin had two close dual meets, topping Minnesota, 31-28 and Michigan, 34-29.
The Gold/Silver Pool will feature four teams, so the champions and the runners-up in the pools also advanced.
Ohio claimed the second place position in Pool A. Ohio was among three teams which finished with 4-2 records, along with Washington and Oklahoma. Washington beat Ohio, Ohio beat Oklahoma, while Oklahoma beat Washington. Ohio emerged from the tie-breaking process to take second.
Michigan, with a strong 4-1 record in Pool B, took second and will also advance to the Gold/Silver Pool.
The action continues Saturday with color pool duals and final placement matches starting at 10 a.m. Central Standard Time. Watch live on FloWrestling.
