Deadline for state champions to register for High School National Recruiting Showcase extended

by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling

Current and past state high school champions and Prep National champions will still have the ability to register directly for the new USA Wrestling High School National Recruiting Showcase in Coralville, Iowa, March 25-27.

The level of competition will be very high, based upon registrations so far. As of March 1, there are 121 state champions who have committed to compete in Coralville. That includes 64 state champion girls and 57 state champions boys from 36 different states.

All state champions and National Prep champions (any year) automatically qualify for the High School National Recruiting Showcase for both boys and girls (They would not need to attend a qualifier). State champions are defined as state association sanctioned state champions for boys, and both state association sanctioned champions and recognized unofficial state champions for girls in folkstyle.

For high school boys, competition will be in folkstyle (also known as scholastic wrestling), while high school girls will compete in freestyle, the style contested in college and at the international levels. High school girls can also compete in the Girls Folkstyle Nationals, also in Coralville, held March 27-28, which has no pre-qualification.

Due to COVID-19 protocols, an entry cap has been set on this event of 1,300 boys and 500 girls.

Originally, USA Wrestling set a March 1 deadline for state champions and National Prep champions in order to guarantee that state champions can have their spot in the tournament, as well as make sure that all of the athletes who qualify through the eight qualifying events will be able to participate. Based upon data received at this time, there will be an opportunity for more state champions to compete. They will now be able to sign up until the registration deadline set for the event.
