FARGO, N.D. - There are still 15 men's freestyle wrestlers in the 16U division still in contention to win the USA Wrestling Triple Crown (USA Wrestling Folkstyle, Greco-Roman and Freestyle national championship winners the same year) after the first session of the 16U Nationals in Fargo.
In total, there were 16 wrestlers in the 16U men’s freestyle field who are ranked in the FloWrestling National High School Rankings. After the morning of wrestling, 14 of those wrestlers are still wrestling in the championship bracket. The group is highlighted by California’s #2 Aden Valencia (120), Iowa’s #3 Carter Freeman (113) and Pennsylvania’s #3 Vincent Kilkeary (113).
Saturday’s morning session finished with the Round of 32 matches stopping after the 132-pound weight class, with the rest of the Round of 32 bouts being scheduled for the next session, which begins at 3:00 p.m. CT
A highlighted match of the day came very early, as #7 Isaiah Quintero of California was able to begin his run through the 106-pound bracket with an impressive win to begin the 16U action at the FargoDome. Quintero knocked off Chase Van Hoven of Virginia, who won April’s 16U Folkstyle Nationals at 100 lbs.
At 113, two upsets wrapped up the morning session. New Jersey’s Leo DeLuca pulled off one of the upsets, knocking off #10 Jaxon Joy of Ohio, a 10-0 technical fall win. Shortly after, Nick Treaster of Kansas held on late and posted a fall over #18 Logan Lau of Hawaii. Both DeLuca and Treaster will be wrestlers to follow as they move into the Round of 16.
The 16U men’s freestyle competition will wrestle tonight through the quarterfinals, in the session beginning at 3:00 p.m. CST. The semifinals for the event are set for tomorrow evening’s session, beginning at 4:30 p.m. CST.
