Angelina Vargas named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Angelina Vargas (Kansas City, Mo./Team Missouri) was named as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on June 20.
Vargas made the All-Tournament Team in both women’s freestyle and women’s Greco-Roman at the Junior National Duals in Tulsa, Okla., June 14-17, and helped lead the Missouri Fire to the team title in women’s freestyle.
In freestyle, Vargas had a 7-0 record, defeating three nationally ranked athletes at 117 pounds, No. 15 Mia Hargrove of Colorado, No. 9 Sierra Chiesa of Pennsylvania and No. 10 Alexis Lazar of Michigan. Included were three technical falls and two pins. Her 8-4 victory over Lazar was the first match of the dual meet and got Missouri Fire off to a great start against Michigan Blue.
In Greco-Roman, Vargas had a 10-0 record for Missouri, which won the Bronze/Copper pool to place ninth as a team. Included in her Greco-Roman effort were five technical falls, one pin, an injury default victory and three forfeits.
Vargas, who was a sophomore at Park Hill High School in Missouri this past season, and is currently ranked No. 6 at 117 pounds in the National Girls High School rankings. She is a two-time state champion, winning the 2023 Missouri Class 2 state title at 115 and the 2022 Missouri state title at 115. Among her recent achievements is placing third in the 2023 National Recruiting Showcase, fourth at the 2023 U17 World Team Trials and sixth at the U20 World Team Trials.
