A group of coaches of women’s wrestling programs at the community college level has provided information that was developed into the first Community College women’s wrestling rankings.
Both individual and team rankings were included in this inaugural ranking for two-year schools.
There were 14 teams included in the team ranking, with Grays Harbor College from Washington state coming in at No. 1. Rounding out the top five were No. 2 Big Bend CC (WA), No. 3 Indian Hills CC (IA), No. 4 Umpqua CC (OR), and No. 5 Southwestern Oregon CC (OR). Teams from seven different states are included in the team ranking.
Athletes were ranked in each of 11 weight classes used in women’s college wrestling. Grays Harbor has the most No. 1 ranked athletes with three, Tatum Pine (123), Kamila Montenegro (170) and Sila Fotu (191).
Plans are being formed to host the first Community College women’s wrestling national tournament later in 2021.
In December, the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) gave women’s wrestling its Emerging Sport Status, which should help increase the number of teams in the future.
