Five Point Move unveils post-Senior Nationals domestic Greco-Roman rankings

The 2020 US Nationals brought forth an interesting, and at times adrenalizing, blend of established Senior performers and exceptionally-skilled college-aged wrestlers who stepped up to put on quite the show -- from the early rounds all the way to the finals. Greco-Roman needed a boost in order to retake some of the headlines lost in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic that hit these shores immediately (or during) the Pan-Am Qualifier last March. Coralville, Iowa originally wasn’t supposed to be the site of such a resurgence, but it was; and for now, the sport is better for it.
The first edition of Five Point Move’s Greco-Roman rankings saw each member of the 2019 US World Team in an Olympic weight category occupy a top spot. That is no longer the case, as Alan Vera (NYAC) now owns the #1 position at 87 kilograms following his decision over Joe Rau (TMWC/IRTC). Vera’s climb over Rau was not the product of Coralville’s result by itself, but rather because Vera had also defeated the popular two-time World Team member in January of ‘19.
One head-to-head win is not enough to usurp a #1 athlete. Two or more is a different story, however, especially when we are discussing the likes of Vera, whom upon receiving his US passport will officially become eligible for a US Trials tournament -- and also the favorite in many observers’ eyes to go toe-to-toe with Rau in April’s best-of-three.
Three other weight categories in the top-10 were disrupted, as well. At 77 kilograms, now-three-time National champ Kendrick Sanders (NYAC/NTS) skyrocketed from #12 all the way to #6. Sanders had a big day in Iowa, running up four dynamic technical superiority victories, including the one that disposed of top-seeded World Teamer Patrick Smith (Minnesota Storm) in the final.
97 kilograms offers a tick up the ladder from National runner Chad Porter (Sunkist), who rises from #9 to #8 -- and stout prospect Braxton Amos (Badger RTC) is ranked for the first time on the heels of his encouraging third-place showing. The land of the monsters, 130 kilos, is last but not least, as another runner-up receives a bump, West Cathcart (NYAC/IRTC). Cathcart, originally ranked #7 last month, was second to Cohlton Schultz (Sunkist) in Coralville, and more importantly than that, competed with confidence and conviction along with showing off some impressive movement in the ties that is sure to set up more offensive opportunities on the feet down the road.
But Cathcart wasn’t the only heavyweight to walk out of the tournamnt rewarded in the rankings. Newcomer Tanner Farmer (IRTC) -- the former D1 lineman for Nebraska who made the NAIA National finals last season for Concordia -- was suitably impressive in his first Senior foray, stealing a win over Donny Longendyke (Minnesota Storm, 5PM #8), dropping a 4-3 decision to Schultz, and ultimately finishing fourth to...Longendke. A very promising debut, to be sure, and Farmer is ranked #10 right out of the gate.
How the Rankings Work
Five Point Move’s rankings utilize a point system based on event results. For this season, points earned are associated with placings (domestically and internationally) dating back to the autumn of 2016, which represents the beginning of the current Olympic cycle. Once the Tokyo Olympic Games are concluded, the rankings will reset and start all over again.
In addition, 5PM rankings observe what is called the “Prior Year Reduction Clause”. Points accumulated from ‘16, ‘17, and ‘18 are diminished by small percentages. Results from ‘19 are not subject to this clause due to what you might refer to as a “grace period” since athletes were without sanctioned competition until very recently.
