Match of the Day: Henry Cejudo defeats Stephen Abas to make the 2008 Olympic Team
by USA Wrestling
In 2008, Henry Cejudo became the youngest U.S. Olympic wrestling champion at 21 years old. In 2016, Kyle Snyder would break that record, winning Olympic gold at 20.
To make the Olympic Team at 55 kg, Cejudo battled the legendary Stephen Abas in a best-of-three series in the Olympic Team Trials finals. Abas was a 2004 Olympic silver medalist and a three-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American for Fresno State, where he compiled a 144-4 college record.
In the first match, Cejudo claimed victory winning 3-2 and 4-0. Abas won the second match, 2-0 and 6-3. Watch their deciding third match below:
Tomorrow, Cejudo will square off with Dominick Cruz at UFC 249 with the bantamweight title on the line. Cejudo was previously a two-division champion, claiming the featherweight title in August 2018 and the bantamweight title in June 2019. However, Cejudo relinquished the flyweight title this past December to focus solely on competing at bantamweight. In his mixed martial arts career, Cejudo has established a 15-2 record and has not taken a loss since 2016.
