by Mike Willis, USA Wrestling
Spencer Woods is one of three Americans with a 1-0 record after day one.
The first day of competition has concluded at the Thor Masters tournament in Nykobing Falster, Denmark. Seven of the ten Americans entered are still alive in their pools and will continue wrestling tomorrow. The tournament is utilizing the vertical pairing system for all the weight classes besides 55 kg, which is a three-man round robin. If a wrestler drops two matches in their pool, they are eliminated.
At 60 kg, No. 2 on the National Team Leslie Fuenffinger (Colorado Springs Colo/.Army WCAP) started off strong with an 8-3 decision over Helary Mägisalu of Estonia. In his second match, he will face Viktor Petryk of Ukraine. Petryk finished 13th at 55 kg in the 2019 World Championships.
Spencer Woods (Marquette, Mich./New York AC/NMU-OTS) is another wrestler off to a 1-0 start. In his opening match at 82 kg, he defeated 2017 Junior World fifth-place finisher Ali Osman Erbay of Turkey, 6-2. His next opponent will be Filip Sacic of Croatia.
The last undefeated American is Cohlton Schultz (Parker, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 130 kg. The 2017 Cadet World champion, 2018 Junior World bronze medalist and 2019 Junior World silver medalist earned a 6-4 victory over Rafal Krajewski of Poland. Krajwski finished 30th at the 2019 World Championships. Schultz will see Suleyman Erbay of Turkey in his next match.
Other Americans who still have a chance to make the podium include Alex Mossing (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Force) at 77 kg, Tommy Brackett, Eads, (Tenn./NMU-OTS) at 82 kg and Carter Nielsen, (Foley, Minn./MN Storm) at 87 kg.
Brady Koontz (Plover, Wis./Titan Mercury/Ohio RTC) has not wrestled yet. However, there are only three men registered in the 55 kg weight class, so he is guaranteed to place.
Alejandro Sancho (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP), Lenny Merkin (Brooklyn, N.Y./New York AC) and Lucas Sheridan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) all went 0-2 and have been eliminated from competition.
Sancho, who was competing at 67 kg, took a tight loss to Denis Bolunov of Estonia, 4-4, on criteria and a 9-0 loss to 2017 World silver medalist Mateusz Bernatek of Poland.
Merkin, also competing at 67 kg, was defeated by Kadir Kamal of Turkey, a third-place finisher at the 2019 City of Sassari ranking tournament and Oleksandr Hrushyn of Ukraine, a 2015 Cadet World champion, 2017 Junior World silver medalist and 2018 U23 World bronze medalist.
At 97 kg, Sheridan fell to Kalle Persson of Sweden and Felix Baldauf of Norway, a 2019 European Games bronze medalist.
