A group of Senior men’s freestyle wrestlers from the New York Athletic Club will compete at the Guelph Open, in Guelph, Ontario, Canada on Saturday, January 18.
There are eight NYAC men’s freestyle athletes expected to compete, four who compete internationally for the United States, and four who wrestle internationally for other nations.
The group of entries includes a pair of past U23 World Team members for the USA, Muhamed McBryde (Buffalo, N.Y./New York AC/Buffalo WC) at 79 kg and Youssif Hemida (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC/Cliff Keen WC) at 125 kg. Hemida, a college star at Maryland, was a 2018 U23 World silver medalist. McBryde was fifth in the 2019 U23 World Championships.
International athletes with the New York AC team are Dave Habat of Slovenia (65 kg), Malik Amine of San Marino (65 kg) and Lars Schaefle of Germany (86 kg).
The other wrestlers from the NYAC on the roster are Michigan star Domenic Abounader (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC/Cliff Keen WC) at 86 kg, Steve Liebler (Buffalo, N.Y./New York AC/Buffalo WC) at 92 kg and Jeremy Benton (Basking Ridge, N.J./New York AC/Buffalo WC) at 125 kg.
The Guelph Open includes both men’s freestyle and women’s freestyle divisions. Traditionally, a number of U.S. athletes enter in both styles. There could be other U.S. athletes from different clubs or Regional Training Centers who enter this tournament.
