by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
USA Wrestling produced a Moments Off the Mat feature with a number of women wrestlers who are attending NCAA Div. I universities that do not have a varsity women’s wrestling team. These young women each have a unique story to share about their love for wrestling and how they have created pathways to continue their careers on the mat. Each are building a culture for women’s wrestling on their campus.
There is one current NCAA Div. I women’s wrestling program, Presbyterian College, and one which is forming a team, Sacred Heart. However, there are numerous women wrestlers who attend Div. I schools who continue to wrestle, through a Regional Training Center, a club wrestling program or as a member of their men’s wrestling roster.
This interview is moderated by Christine Cunningham, a former wrestler at Stanford and 2011 graduate, with input from long-time women’s wrestling leader Jacque Davis. Listen the stories of student-athletes Marisol Nugent of Lehigh, Melinda Meng of Harvard, Demetra Yancopoulos of Princeton, Brianna Csontos of Columbia and Sandra Moon of Harvard. Hear from the women who are helping build the future of women’s wrestling at the Div. I level.
