Pin of the Week: Sara McMann locks up an Olympic medal with a semifinal pin at the 2004 Olympic Games
by USA Wrestling
This particular match was already featured as a “Match of the Day” on June 30th, but given that wrestling was scheduled to occur during the Olympic Games this week, it feels fitting to showcase it again.
At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, the first to feature women’s wrestling, Sara McMann became the first U.S. woman to make an Olympic finals match. She did so with style, pinning Greece’s Stavroula Zygouri in the first period.
McMann, a 2003 World silver medalist, cemented herself in wrestling history with this win. She would go on to earn World bronze medals in 2005 and 2007 and a NoGi grappling World title in 2009 before transitioning into MMA. She currently holds a 12-5 record and competes in the UFC. She won her most recent fight, a unanimous decision over Lina Lansberg, in January 2020.
