Pin of the Week: Adam Coon pins Robby Smith to make his first Senior World Team
by Mike Willis, USA Wrestling
Coming into the 2018 World Team Trials, Robby Smith had made five-straight Greco-Roman World or Olympic Teams at heavyweight and reached the medal match at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships.
While dethroning Smith was a tall order, Adam Coon was up to the task. In 2016, Coon reached the finals of the Olympic Team Trials, only to fall Smith in two-straight matches. In 2017, Coon did not compete due to injury, but by 2018, he was back to peak form.
At the 2018 World Team Trials, Coon defeated Smith two matches to none to make his first Senior World Team. Trailing Smith on criteria in the closing seconds, Coon secured a body lock and took Smith to his back for the fall. Coon would utilize his body lock to pin his way to the World finals later that year.
