NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan – The first group of two men’s freestyle weight classes concluded at the World Championships on Friday, and only one national anthem was heard during medal ceremony. Russia claimed gold medals in both weight classes completed today.

Bringing home titles for Russia were Zavur Ugaev at 57 kg and Gadzhimurad Rashidov at 65 kg. Both are Olympic weight classes.

Ugaev won his second straight World title, scoring a 13-3 technical fall in the finals over Suleyman Atli of Turkey. The match was close early on, but Uguev was able to blast it open when he scored multiple-times in par terre.

Rashidov also scored a technical fall in the finals, quieting the home crowd by putting away Daulet Niyazbekov of host Kazakhstan, 11-0. It was Rashidov’s first Senior World gold medal, to go with silver medals in 2017 and 2018.

American wrestling fans were able to follow Michigan wrestler Stevan Micic of Serbia, who reached the bronze medal bout at 57 kg, where he was edged by host Kazakhstan hero Nurislam Sanayev, 4-3. Both of these athletes have represented other nations internationally. Micic won a Junior World bronze medal for the United States, and Sanayev (under the name Artas Sanaa) initially competed for Russia.

The two U.S. athletes in Group 1 did not qualify for medal rounds. In his first Senior Worlds, Daton Fix (Sand Springs, Okla./Titan Mercury WC/Cowboy RTC) went 1-1 at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. to place 12th. He lost a tight 4-2 decision to past World champion Yuki Takahashi of Japan. Zain Retherford (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) dropped his only match, 10-9 battle with Alejandro Valdes Tobier of Cuba and finished 26th. Retherford was in his second Senior Worlds.
